CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Adults who are covered by Medicaid use emergency rooms 40% more than those in similar circumstances who do not have health insurance, according to a new study co-authored by an MIT economist that sheds empirical light on the inner workings of health care in the United States.

The study takes advantage of Oregon's recent use of a lottery to assign access to Medicaid, the government-backed healthcare plan for low-income Americans, to certain uninsured adults. The research examines emergency room records for roughly 25,000 people for a period of 18 months.

NEW YORK — Diabetes organizations in several cities are getting a boost in funding from a Danish drug maker that specializes in developing treatments for the disease.

Novo Nordisk said it would provide funding to groups in Seattle; Portland, Ore.; and Rochester, Minn., as part of the Novo Nordisk Community Care initiative. The initiative provides funding to nonprofits that support educational programs for people with Type 2 diabetes.

More than half of all Americans take some form of dietary supplement, and an estimated 40% of U.S. adults take both drugs and nutrients as part of their health regimen. Of these, 60% aren’t discussing possible interactions with their physician or pharmacist, Aisle7 noted.

EUGENE, Ore. — Natural dietary supplement and OTC product maker Quantum Health has hired a new CEO, the company said.

Quantum Health announced that it had hired Jason Pellegrini, who previously served as VP sales for the grocery channel at MillerCoors. Pellegrini has also previously worked for LivePlanet, Viant, Mitchell Madison Group and ACNielsen. He started with Quantum Health in August.

NEW YORK — Safeway will take over prescriptions from an Oregon grocery store, according to published reports.

The Albany, Ore., Democrat-Herald reported that Safeway in Albany, Ore., would take over prescription files from Ray's Food Store in North Albany, starting on Thursday.

The owner of Ray's, C&K Market, said earlier this month that it would stop operating the pharmacy, which will close at 4 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday, and Ray's customers have been notified, the newspaper reported.

Cole; its president, James Cole; and its general manager, Julie Graves, following the company’s repeated distribution of unapproved drugs and adulterated dietary supplements in violation of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.

The Lund Report, an online publication that covers Oregon's healthcare system, reported that Gary Schnabel was stepping down to pursue "other interests." Schnabel turned 65 years old this month and has lead the board for 19 years.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – A company that makes vending machine-like systems has a new business: medical and recreational marijuana.

Medbox said Thursday that it had been contracted to file dispensary license applications and build-out facilities in Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Oregon, Illinois and Nevada, as well as recreational licenses in Washington and Colorado. Residents of the latter two states voted to legalize recreational use of marijuana last year.

The National Psoriasis Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation said they would partner for the second year to educate residents of southern California about psoriatic arthritis, a chronic, inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects about 300,000 people in the state and 98,000 people in the Los Angeles area.

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. — Galena Biopharma has purchased rights to a treatment for breakthrough cancer pain from a Swedish drug maker, Galena said Monday.

Galena, which specializes in cancer-related drugs, said it acquired Abstral (fentanyl) sublingual tablets for sale and distribution in the United States from Orexo AB. Breakthrough cancer pain, or BTcP, affects between 40% to 80% of cancer patients, with reported episodes of four per day and a median duration of 30 minutes, according to Galena.
