NEW YORK — Colgate-Palmolive, which posted a dip in North American sales during the fourth quarter, experienced share gains in oral care and has outlined new product launches planned for 2011.

North American sales declined 2% during the fourth quarter as unit volume increased 1.5% with 4% lower pricing and 0.5% positive foreign exchange. Organic sales slipped 2.5%. North America operating profit decreased 8% during the quarter, driven by increased promotional investments and higher material costs, partially offset by cost-savings initiatives.

Dr. Fresh's FireFly children's toothbrush and its licensed counterparts have earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.

BUENA PARK, Calif. — Dr. Fresh's FireFly children's toothbrush and its licensed counterparts have earned the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance.

The ADA Council on Scientific Affairs' acceptance of FireFly is based on its findings that the product is effective for removing plaque and helping to prevent and reduce gingivitis when used as directed.

Sunstar Americas, a maker of Gum and Butler brand products, is offering its Gum Soft-Picks in new 15- and 80-count packages.

CHICAGO — Sunstar Americas, a maker of Gum and Butler brand products, is offering its Gum Soft-Picks in new 15- and 80-count packages.

Gum Soft-Picks have 76 soft, flexible rubber bristles that slide between teeth to remove food and gently massage gums. According to the company, Gum Soft-Picks are safe to use on dental implants, bridges, crowns and orthodontics.

To date, Gum Soft-Picks have been offered only in a package of 40, retailing for $3.49. Now Sunstar is offering a new 15-count package for $1.50 and an 80-count package for $5.99.

NEW YORK — Stephen Patrick late Friday announced his retirement as CFO of Colgate-Palmolive, effective Jan. 1.

Patrick, who has been working with the company since 1982 and has been CFO for 14 years, will be succeeded by 33-year Colgate veteran Dennis Hickey, VP and corporate controller. Patrick will assume the role of vice chairman until March 2011.

Many active diabetes managers have not changed their oral care habits since being diagnosed, despite the fact they are at higher risk for developing serious complications from poor oral hygiene, according to a study by dLife, a multimedia network serving the diabetes community, and market research firm SoundView Research.

Furthermore, more than half of active diabetes managers surveyed had not been advised by their dentists to take extra care to brush, floss or rinse daily.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday issued warning letters to three companies that manufacture and market mouth rinse products with claims that they remove plaque above the gum line or promote healthy gums. According to the FDA, these claims suggested the products are effective in preventing gum disease when no such benefit has been demonstrated.

Warning letters were sent to: Johnson & Johnson (Listerine total care anti-cavity mouthwash), CVS (CVS complete care anti-cavity mouthwash), and Walgreens (Walgreen mouth rinse full action).
