Canadian pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart posted an increase in fourth-quarter sales driven by gains at the front end and strength in prescription count growth.

TORONTO — Canadian pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart posted an increase in fourth-quarter sales driven by gains at the front end and strength in prescription count growth. The company also noted that it is gearing up for an expansion of its enhanced beautyBOUTIQUE during 2014.

Sales for the quarter were Canadian $2.75 billion, an increase of 0.9% compared with the year-ago period. Same-store sales increased 1.2% during the quarter.

Canadian pharmacy retailer Shoppers Drug Mart has announced that the Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the Dec. 23, 2011, decision of the Court of Appeal of Ontario that restored the prohibition on private-label generic drug products in the Province of Ontario, which was subsequent to a decision of the Ontario Divisional Court dated Feb. 3, 2011, that declared the regulatory restrictions in respect of private-label generic drug products to be invalid.

Target is extending its hours during holiday shopping season at its Canadian stores, the mass-merchandise retailer said Monday.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Target is extending its hours during the holiday shopping season at its Canadian stores, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

Target said most of its Canadian locations would offer extended hours from Nov. 29 to Dec. 30 as part of the "My Kind of Holiday" marketing campaign. The retailer will also extend its price-matching policy for the season; if customers purchase a qualifying item at Target between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24 and subsequently find it for less in a local competitors printed ad, Target will match the competitor's price.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Target is on track to open all the stores it intends to in Canada, the mass merchandise retailer said Monday.

Target aid it would open its remaining 33 stores scheduled for 2013 in November, including the first stores in New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland provinces. Thirty-one stores will open on Nov. 13, and the remaining two will open on Nov. 22. The retailer had 124 Canadian store openings planned for the year and said it would announce additional store openings at a later date.

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has approved Loblaw’s acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart, Shoppers Drug Mart announced on Monday.

TORONTO — The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has approved Loblaw’s acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart, Shoppers Drug Mart announced on Monday.

Completion of the arrangement remains conditional on compliance with the Competition Act and certain other closing conditions customary in transactions of this nature. The transaction is expected to be completed before the end of first quarter 2014.

All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — All of Target's stores in Canada have been certified for sustainability, the retailer said Thursday.

Target said that all of the 68 stores it operates in Canada have been awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED certification; most recently, 44 were certified. The company plans to have all 124 stores it is opening this year LEED-certified.

The mass merchandise retailer said it would open 14 stores on Sept. 17 and nine more on Oct. 18. A majority of the stores will feature a Starbucks, as well as a pharmacy. Most stores in Quebec will feature Brunet pharmacies, which will open in summer 2014.

QUEBEC CITY, Quebec — Shoppers Drug Mart, which operates under the Pharmaprix banner in Quebec, has announced that Canada's first and only national women's and girl's running race series expanded to six cities.

The Pharmaprix Run for Women Series consists of a 5K, 10K and Little Steps Girls 1K, and includes a motivational talk from an iconic Canadian Olympian in each city. A portion of proceeds and participant donations will go towards women's mental health programs in each of the six race cities.
