A subsidiary of Watson Pharmaceuticals has entered a licensing agreement with a subsidiary of Hungarian drug maker Richter to develop and market a drug for uterine fibroids, the two companies said Thursday.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — A subsidiary of Watson Pharmaceuticals has entered a licensing agreement with a subsidiary of Hungarian drug maker Richter to develop and market a drug for uterine fibroids, the two companies said Thursday.

Watson Labs and PregLem said European studies had shown Esmya (ulipristal acetate) to be a safe and effective treatment for the disease, a benign tumor condition that affects between one-fifth and one-fourth of women of reproductive age worldwide. Watson expected to start phase-3 studies of the drug in the United States in 2011.

SAN ANTONIO — Despite recommendations, half of women ages 40 years and older do not get annual mammograms, according to a new study by pharmacy benefit manager Medco.

The analysis, from the Medco Research Institute, also found that nearly 40% of women ages 50 years and older don’t get biennial screenings. Data from the study will be presented at the 33rd annual CTRC-AACR San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.

SILVER SPRING, Md. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new treatment for breast cancer, the agency said Monday.

The FDA approved Eisai’s Halaven (eribulin mesylate) for patients with breast cancer that has spread and who have received at least two chemotherapy regimens for the disease in its late stages. More than 200,000 women will be diagnosed this year with breast cancer, and nearly 40,000 will die from it, making it the second leading cause of cancer-related death among women, according to the National Cancer Institute.

LONDON The Food and Drug Administration has accepted AstraZeneca’s regulatory application for an investigational cancer drug, the Anglo-Swedish drug maker said Thursday.

 

AstraZeneca announced the FDA’s acceptance of its application for vandetanib, a drug for treating patients with advanced medullary thyroid cancer. The agency gave the drug priority review status and expected to take action on it in January.

INGELHEIM, Germany Boehringer Ingelheim has started a late-stage clinical trial of a drug for treating breast cancer, the German drug maker said Friday.

 

The phase 3 trial, dubbed the “LUX-Breast 1” trial, will evaluate the drug afatinib in patients with advanced breast cancer. The drug is a tablet that BI said was the first to inhibit two chemicals involved in tumor growth -- the epidermal growth factor receptor, or EGFR, and the human epidermal receptor, also known as HER2.

NEW ORLEANS Researchers at the Mayo Clinic may have found a link between colorectal cancer and diabetes in older women.

The findings, which are being presented at the American Gastroenterological Association's annual meeting, Digestive Disease Week 2010, examined data from 37,695 participants of the Iowa Women’s Health Study, which enrolled women ages 55 to 69 years in 1986 and remains ongoing. Of these women, 2,361 reported a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes and 1,200 developed colorectal cancer.
