ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Diabetes Association announced on Monday that this November's American Diabetes Month is sponsored by the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare Advantage for Diabetes savings program, a free offering that provides exclusive savings, prescription management services, recipes and pharmacist tips developed exclusively for those living with the disease, as well as their caregivers.

WASHINGTON — Honoring the 100th anniversary of the vitamin, Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J., last week entered into the U.S. House of Representatives' Congressional Record remarks recognizing this special milestone, the Council for Responsible Nutrition announced.

In 1912, Polish-American scientist Casimir Funk, considered the "father of vitamin therapy," first used the term "vitamin" to describe a group of bioactive substances vital to human health.

Supply issues earlier this year took many facings of GlaxoSmithKline's Alli nonprescription weight loss solution out of play, but no longer, as of earlier this summer. With Alli's absence, the hefty weight-loss solution fell behind Hydroxycut Advanced in number of units sold but still led all diet aids in sales with an 18.2% dollar share (to Hydroxycut Advanced's 9.6%).

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Wednesday created a free, searchable compilation of all dietary supplement advertising decisions issued by the National Advertising Division since 2007, when the Dietary Supplement Advertising Review Program began.

Judging from the number of dietary supplement companies that are being snatched up by heavy-hitting suppliers in the over-the-counter space, the 5% uptick in supplement sales for the 52 weeks ended Aug. 12 is one trend that stands to continue. Sales across food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart) for that period totaled $1.5 billion, according to SymphonyIRI Group data. 


Procter & Gamble in March acquired New Chapter, and with that now fields a comprehensive line of supplements that goes well beyond the probiotic Align and the fiber supplement Metamucil it already owned. 


 OTTAWA, Canada — A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics determined that 3-out-of-4 critically ill children were found to have vitamin D blood levels below the target considered safe by many experts and medical societies. 

"This is the first study to report on vitamin D levels in a large group of critically ill children," stated Dayre McNally, lead researcher and a clinical researcher and intensivist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

CHICAGO — As part of a meta-analysis spanning 70,000 patients, a study published in the Sept. 12 issue of JAMA determined supplementation with omega-3 fish oils was not associated with a lower risk in heart disease. Lead researcher Evangelos Rizos of the University Hospital of Ioannina in Greece, concluded that omega-3 supplement recommendations may be overblown.

DES PERES, Mo. — A Schnuck Markets store in Missouri will sponsor a special sampling of gluten-free foods to mark a day of recognition for people who can't eat gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1.9 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed each year. To help its customers better understand this illness, Sam's Club pharmacy locations are offering free diabetes and vision screenings (diabetes is a leading cause of blindness) for members and the public on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

NEW YORK — A growing number of truckers are paying closer attention to their health, according to published reports.

USA Today reported that some trucking companies are adopting wellness program for drivers, while some truck stops are offering healthy food items and exercise rooms. Meanwhile, some truckers take bicycles with them or make their own food and take it along.

PRINCETON, N.J. - Church & Dwight on Monday became the latest large-scale CPG company to field a line of gummy vitamins with its acquisition of Avid Health for $650 million in cash.
