CARLISLE, Pa. — A health-and-wellness conference that brings together retail dietitians and nutritionists has tapped Ahold USA and its Giant Carlisle division as the event's retail host.

Field Trip Factory's third annual Dietitian Summit, which strives to generate awareness about the food industry's commitment to consumer health, will be held next month at a Giant Super Food store in Willow Grove, Pa. About 40 retail dietitians and nutritionists are expected to attend the three-day conference.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. and BERLIN — Regeneron and Bayer HealthCare have initiated 1-of-2 late-stage clinical trials of their aflibercept ophthalmic solution in the treatment of a complication caused by diabetic retinopathy.

The drug makers said that it would evaluate the efficacy of VEGF Trap-Eye (aflibercept ophthalmic solution) in the treatment of diabetic macular edema, a prevalent cause of vision loss among diabetes patients, after promising results from its previous clinical trial.

Published in the International Journal of Obesity, a study conducted by Kaiser Permanente researchers found that among 472 obese participants with body mass indexes of 30 to 50, weight loss significantly correlated with decreased stress levels.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned consumers to stop using Soladek, a vitamin-solution product marketed by Indo Pharma of the Dominican Republic, because the product may contain dangerously high levels of vitamins A and D.

The FDA received seven reports of serious health problems occurring in consumers using the product. The problems include decreased renal function, elevated levels of calcium in the blood, fatigue, heart arrhythmia, vomiting and diarrhea.

Slimple contains MaCoca, a proprietary blend derived from a de-cocainized coca leaf. 

The extract is processed using a method that carefully removes the alkaloids while retaining all of the active ingredients, enabling it to be legally used as a food additive, the company stated. According to MB Innovations, the coca leaf contains flavonoids, triterpenoids, vitamin C, amino acids, carotenoids, vitamin B complex and essential oils.

SAN ANTONIO — A drug for Type 2 diabetes made by Takeda Pharmaceutical taken in the morning prevented the disease from developing in nearly three-quarters of patients who were at risk, according to a new study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers enrolled 602 patients through the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio and seven other centers and administered Actos (pioglitazone) to them, finding that it prevented Type 2 diabetes in 72% of those whose obesity, ethnicity and other factors put them at risk for the disease.

The company is boosting its Detour brand by the Detour lean muscle high-protein shake to its existing line of Detour protein bars. The shake, the company said, is fortified with 26 vitamins and minerals, provides 1,000 mg of omega-3 and will be available in milk chocolate and vanilla bean flavors.

The Detour lean muscle high-protein shakes will be available next month in health and fitness retailers and GNC stores nationwide.
