An international team led by researchers at the Broad Institute and Massachusetts General Hospital has identified mutations in a gene that can reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, even in people who have such risk factors as obesity and old age, the group announced Sunday.

The results focus the search for developing novel therapeutic strategies for Type 2 diabetes — if a drug can be developed that mimics the protective effect of these mutations, it could open up new ways of preventing this devastating disease.

The trial is recruiting patients through more than 35 pharmacies and is expected to be completed by year-end.

ATLANTA — The latest obesity data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, published in the Feb. 26 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, showed a significant decline in obesity among children aged 2 to 5 years. Obesity prevalence for this age group went from nearly 14% in 2003-2004 to just more than 8% in 2011-2012 — a decline of 43% — based on CDC’s National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data.

The two-year study looked at the role of over-the-counter vitamin D3 as a supplemental treatment for chronic hives.
