ARDEE, Ireland Drug maker Warner Chilcott will buy the U.S. rights to a treatment for overactive bladder for $400 million, the company said Friday.

 

The drug maker announced that it would terminate its co-promotion agreement with Novartis concerning the drug Enablex (darifenacin) and purchase the rights to sell it in the United States. It may be required to make additional milestone payments of up to $20 million to Novartis.

SILVER SPRING, Md. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug for reducing relapses in patients with multiple sclerosis.

 

The FDA announced Wednesday the approval of Swiss drug maker Novartis’ Gilenia (fingolimod) capsules, saying it was the first oral drug that can slow the progression of disability in patients with MS and offered an alternative to injected drugs.

 

 

Around 400,000 people in the United States and 2.1 million worldwide have MS, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

EAST HANOVER, N.J. The Food and Drug Administration has approved a single-pill combination of two drugs made by Novartis for treating high blood pressure, the Swiss drug maker said Friday.

 

The FDA approved Tekamlo (aliskiren and amlodipine besylate) tablets, which combine Tekturna (aliskiren) with amlodipine, a channel blocker available as a generic. The drug is approved for treating patients who are likely to need multiple drugs to lower their blood pressure or as a replacement for patients who can’t control it using one of the drugs alone.

NEW YORK The global market for vaccines grew to more than $20 billion last year, according to a report by healthcare market research firm Kalorama Information.

 

The New York-based firm’s report, “Vaccines 2010: World Market Analysis, Key Players and Critical Trends in a Fast-Changing Industry,” indicated that the world market for preventative vaccines was $22.1 billion in 2009, compared with $19 billion in 2008.

SILVER SPRING, Md. The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first generic version of a Sanofi-Aventis injected drug used to treat deep vein thrombosis, the agency said Friday.

 

The FDA approved generic enoxaparin sodium, a version of Sanofi’s Lovenox, developed under a collaboration between Momenta Pharmaceuticals and Sandoz, the generics division of Swiss drug maker Novartis.

Teva announced the launch of naratriptan tablets in the 1 mg and 2.5-mg strengths. The tablets are a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s Amerge. The drug is used to treat acute migraine attacks in adults with or without visual disturbances preceding the attacks known as aura.

PRINCETON, N.J. Sandoz has launched a generic drug for treating migraine headaches, the generics arm of Swiss drug maker Novartis said Monday.

 

Sandoz launched naratriptan hydrochloride tablets in the 2.5-mg strength, a generic version of GlaxoSmithKline’s Amerge. The tablets are used for treating acute migraine attacks in adults with or without visual disturbances that occur before the onset of the headache, also known as aura. Studies have indicated that around 12% of Americans have migraine attacks.
