BASEL, Switerland — Swiss drug maker Novartis will focus on innovation as part of a program for long-term growth, the company said Wednesday.

Novartis touted its research and development pipeline of 142 drugs in clinical trials, 35% of which are in phase 3 or undergoing regulatory review, as well as a plan to submit 30 more drugs for regulatory review by the end of 2012. The company also plans to continue investing in vaccine development.

BASEL, Switzerland An investigative vaccine made by Novartis appears to offer good protection against meningococcal disease in infants, according to results of a late-stage clinical trial released Monday.

 

The Swiss drug maker said results of a phase-3 trial showed that Menveo (meningococcal group A, C, W135 and Y) induced immune responses in a high percentage of babies against four strains of the bacteria. Meningococcal disease occurs suddenly and can cause serious illness and often death during the first year of life.

The company, which specializes in generic injectables, announced the launch of piperacillin and tazobactam for injection. The drug is a generic version of Pfizer’s Zosyn.

 

 

Various versions of the drug had sales of $797 million during the 12-month period ended in August, according to IMS Health. Sandoz, the generics division of Novartis, also launched its own version of the drug Thursday.

PRINCETON, N.J. Sandoz has launched a generic antibiotic drug, the generics division of Swiss drug maker Novartis said Thursday.

 

Sandoz announced the launch of piperacillin and tazobactam for injection. The drug is used to treat moderate to severe infections of bacteria resistant to piperacillin alone but vulnerable to the combination of the two drugs.

JERUSALEM The Food and Drug Administration granted approval for Teva's abbreviated new drug application to market a generic version of a drug designed to treat peptic ulcers.

The generic drug maker said that its drug, lansoprazole, is a generic version of Takeda’s Prevacid SoluTab. Annual sales of the branded product were approximately $453 million in the United States, according to IMS sales data.

Sandoz, the generics division of Swiss drug maker Novartis, also announced the launch of its own version of Prevacid SoluTab.

The FDA announced Wednesday the approval of Swiss drug maker Novartis’ Gilenia (fingolimod) capsules, saying it was the first oral drug that can slow the progression of disability in patients with MS and offered an alternative to injected drugs.

 

 

Around 400,000 people in the United States and 2.1 million worldwide have MS, according to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The FDA approved Tekamlo (aliskiren and amlodipine besylate) tablets, which combine Tekturna (aliskiren) with amlodipine, a channel blocker available as a generic. The drug is approved for treating patients who are likely to need multiple drugs to lower their blood pressure or as a replacement for patients who can’t control it using one of the drugs alone.
