MATTHEWS, N.C. — Family Dollar on Thursday said "no thanks" to an active investor's takeover bid.

The discount retailer said the buyout offer of $55 to $60 per share, made by Nelson Peltz's Trian Fund, "undervalued" the company. Family Dollar did, however, strike a deal with Marketing Management to help boost its private-label efforts.

Through this strategic alliance, MMI will help Family Dollar with such private-label issues as sourcing, product development, category analytics, assortment strategy, quality assurance and customer insights.

The portal, which can be accessed on the company's website, provides patients, physicians, nurses and case managers with the ability to access targeted content to review medical records and clinical follow-up, drug dispensing/refill and shipping history. The portal also can be used as a tool to communicate with the clinical staff at MedPro Rx and utilizes a secure, password-protected customer log-in to allow for privacy of information and ease of use for clients.

SALISBURY, N.C. — The push of private label at retail continues to gain momentum as Food Lion kicked off a promotion whereby shoppers can earn up to $10 in free groceries every time they buy private-brand products.

The promotion, dubbed the Private Brand Super Sale, begins March 2 and runs through March 29.

Each time customers shop at Food Lion during the Private Brand Super Sale and purchase at least four Food Lion or Home 360 products using their Food Lion MVP card, they earn a money-saving coupon.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion announced Friday that it would add more of its MVP savings center kiosks to help customers save on their grocery bills.

MVP savings center kiosks, which are part of Food Lion's MVP customer loyalty card program, were introduced in stores last year. Since their introduction, kiosk coupons have up to five times the redemption rate when compared with coupons delivered via traditional distribution channels, Food Lion said.

Money-saving coupon kiosks also can be found at Bloom and at Harveys.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has seized supplies of a drug used to treat ear infections, under a program the agency started to remove unapproved drugs from the market.

The FDA announced the seizure of about $16.5 million worth of Auralgan otic solution made by Brooks, Ky.-based Integrated Commercialization Solutions. Chapel Hill, N.C.-based Deston Therapeutics manufactures the drug, while ICS warehouses it.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Harris Teeter on Friday announced an incentive to its VIC loyalty card customers to receive their seasonal flu shots this season.

Now through the end of May, customers who purchase a seasonal flu shot for only $12.95 with their VIC card will receive an electronic coupon for $12.95, valid on their next grocery purchase of that value or more.

Select Harris Teeter pharmacies are offering these seasonal flu shots right now, the Carolina grocer stated.

Kerr Drug announced its support for the Medication Therapy Management Empowerment Act of 2011, which Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., recently introduced. The National Association of Chain Drug Stores and the National Community Pharmacists Association endorsed the bill last week.

Stiefel will market two products that are indicated for the treatment of acne over the counter under the PanOxyl brand: PanOxyl acne creamy wash will be available in 4% BPO and 8% BPO.

A marketing campaign directed toward pharmacists and dermatologists will communicate details of the new PanOxyl 4% and 8% BPO acne creamy washes. The products will be available for shipment in May.

Off to a strong start for fiscal year 2011, Ingles Markets on Monday reported a 3.8% rise in net sales for its first quarter ended Dec. 25, 2010.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Off to a strong start for fiscal year 2011, Ingles Markets on Monday reported a 3.8% rise in net sales for its first quarter ended Dec. 25, 2010.

Net income totaled $7.7 million for the quarter, a 28.3% jump from the year-ago period.

Comparable-store sales, the retailer noted, increased 2.9%, both including and excluding gasoline sales.

The makers of Drank, Innovative Beverage Group Holdings, said that Adam's Beverage, an independent distributor, will bring the relaxation beverage to North Carolina, as well as to additional cities in South Carolina.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion family of stores and Bottom Dollar Food donated a record 1.5 million lbs. of food to local food banks.

The retailers kicked off their eighth annual Hunger Has a Cure campaign, and sold roughly 250,000 boxes in the effort, which ran from Nov. 17 to Dec. 28, 2010.

The food was donated to food banks affiliated with Feeding America.
