RONKONKOMA, N.Y. NBTY on Tuesday announced the recall of its Air Shield, Air Protector, Immune System Support and AirHealth Effervescent 10-tablet containers, and its Stick Packs 8-stick containers -- all private-label versions of Airborne -- because they may contain undeclared soy, according to a posting of the release on the Food and Drug Administration website.

The recall impacts a host of pharmacy retailers, including CVS, Safeway, Supervalu, Target, Walgreens and Walmart. The products all fall under NBTY’s Leiner Health Solutions umbrella.

NEW YORK The global market for vaccines grew to more than $20 billion last year, according to a report by healthcare market research firm Kalorama Information.

 

The New York-based firm’s report, “Vaccines 2010: World Market Analysis, Key Players and Critical Trends in a Fast-Changing Industry,” indicated that the world market for preventative vaccines was $22.1 billion in 2009, compared with $19 billion in 2008.

NEW YORK The Food and Drug Administration has approved a prefilled dual-chamber syringe made by Pfizer for treating hemophilia, Pfizer said.

 

The FDA approved the syringe for administering the drug Xyntha (antihemophilic factor [recombinant]) for hemophilia A. The drug is used to prevent and control bleeding episodes in patients.

NEW YORK Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer have announced the opening of a new asthma walk-in center in East Harlem, where the rate of childhood asthma hospitalizations is the highest in the city.

The new East Harlem walk-in asthma center -- an expansion of the East Harlem Asthma Center of Excellence and a part of the City's PlaNYC initiative -- is aimed to reduce childhood asthma hospitalizations by 50% over the next five years.

WASHINGTON The companies working on more than half of the mental illness drugs under development are clustered in four U.S. states, according to research by the largest lobby for the drug industry.

 

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America compiled a study showing that of the 313 drugs, 192 are under development by companies in New York, New Jersey, North Carolina and California. The drugs are in clinical trials or under review by the Food and Drug Administration, PhRMA said.

NEW YORK The World Health Organization's director-general Margaret Chan issued a statement on Tuesday that the H1N1 influenza has entered the post-pandemic period, but warned that the virus has not yet gone away.

While WHO has reported marginal levels of H1N1 transmission worldwide as of late, Chan said it expects the H1N1 virus to take on the behavior of a seasonal influenza virus and continue to circulate for some years to come.
