WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. — Merck’s vaccine for human papillomavirus is 89% effective in preventing genital warts in teenage boys and young men, according to a new study.

The phase-3 study of Gardasil (human papillomavirus quadrivalent [types 6, 11, 16 and 18] vaccine, recombinant) in boys and men ages 16 to 26 years was published in the Feb. 3 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Human papillomavirus is the cause of genital and anal warts, and infection can increase the risk of developing cancer later in life.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration declined to approve a drug made by Eisai for treating gastroesophageal reflux disease, Eisai said Tuesday.

The drug maker announced its receipt of a complete response letter from the agency for its application for rabeprazole sodium extended-release capsules, a proton-pump inhibitor for GERD. The FDA delivers a complete response letter when it has finished reviewing a regulatory approval application, but issues remain that preclude final approval of the drug.

A federal court has lifted an injunction that had prevented drug maker Dr. Reddy’s Labs from marketing a generic version of an allergy drug.

HYDERABAD, India — A federal court has lifted an injunction that had prevented drug maker Dr. Reddy’s Labs from marketing a generic version of an allergy drug.

Dr. Reddy’s said the U.S. District Court of New Jersey had filed a stipulation and order lifting the earlier injunction against the drug maker regarding the selling of a version of fexofenadine hydrochloride and pseudoephedrine hydrochloride tablets in the 180-mg/240-mg strength. The drug is a generic version of Sanofi-Aventis’ and Albany Molecular Research’s Allegra-D 24.

Snickers Peanut Butter Squared adds peanut butter to the classic Snickers combination of peanuts, caramel, nougat and milk chocolate. The candy is the top-testing new bar launch for Mars in the last three years.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — Watson Pharmaceuticals is seeking regulatory approval for a generic drug for high cholesterol.

Watson, through subsidiary Watson Labs, said it applied for approval of a generic version of Daiichi Sankyo’s and Genzyme’s Welchol (colesevelam hydrochloride). The drug, a powdered oral suspension, is used to reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol in patients with primary hyperlipidemia, either alone or in combination with a statin.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. — Eisai will not seek regulatory approval for a drug to treat severe sepsis after getting lackluster results from a late-stage clinical trial, the drug maker said Tuesday.

Eisai said a phase-3 trial of the drug eritoran found the drug did not significantly reduce mortality in patients with the condition compared with placebo.

Severe sepsis causes about 215,000 deaths in the United States every year, with a mortality rate of about 30%.

Johnson & Johnson posted decreases in sales for fourth quarter 2010 and for the year, according to an earnings statement released Tuesday.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Johnson & Johnson posted decreases in sales for fourth quarter 2010 and for the year, according to an earnings statement released Tuesday.

Sales for the quarter were $15.6 billion, a 5.5% decrease from fourth quarter 2009’s $16.5 billion. Sales for the year were $61.6 billion, down by 0.5% from $61.9 billion in 2009.

Meanwhile, profits for the quarter were $1.9 billion, a 12% decrease from $2.2 billion in fourth quarter 2009. Profits for the year were $13.3 billion, an 8.7% increase over $12.3 billion in 2009.

Merck announced the acceptance of its application for extended-release Janumet, which combines in a single pill the active ingredient sitagliptin with extended-release metformin, a drug commonly prescribed for Type 2 diabetes.
