WATERBURY, Vt. — Canus, a provider of goat's milk skin care products, is introducing its Caprina by Canus line of soaps, body washes and foaming milk baths to the U.S. market. 

Canus launched Caprina in Canada in early 2009 and, starting in June, Caprina will be available in U.S. retail stores. Both Publix Super Markets with 933 of its stores across the southern United States and Hannaford's 180 locations throughout New England, will begin offering a selection of Caprina products.

ELLISVILLE, Mo. — National Sales Solutions has announced that Rich Siporin will be joining the sales management team as EVP sales for the northeast region.  In this position, he will be responsible for sales development in the New England and New York area.

NEW YORK — Research has indicated that about half of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary, raising concerns about the growth of bacteria resistant to them, but a new study by researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also finds that prescriptions are highest in several states in the South and Midwest.

The study, published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine, was based on a database maintained by IMS Health that includes a sample of more than 70% of U.S. prescriptions.

LYNNFIELD, Mass. — Hood, a New England dairy brand, has entered the fast-growing Greek yogurt market with the introduction of four new Greek frozen yogurts, the company announced today.

Hood Greek Frozen Yogurt combines lowfat frozen yogurt with ingredients such as raspberry swirls, granola crunch and chocolate chips, and are hitting store shelves just in time for the warm weather months.

LeClairRyan attorney Michael Ruggio said officials in several states were increasing scrutiny of compounding pharmacies in the wake of an outbreak of fungal meningitis linked to the New England Compounding Center, which so far sickened 696 people and killed 45, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold has appointed the former head of one of its European supermarket chains to an executive position in its U.S. division.

Ahold USA said it appointed Jan van Dam as EVP supply chain and e-commerce, in which he will focus on supply chain for the company's four U.S. divisions, Stop & Shop in the New York area and New England, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle. He will also be responsible for the company's e-commerce business with Andrew Parkinson, president and general manager of online grocery company Peapod, reporting to him.

WALTHAM, Mass. — One-of-every-4 deaths among Americans between the ages of 35 years and 69 years can be attributed to smoking, according to a study published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine. But smoking cessation efforts can help curb that trend, researchers noted. 

BOSTON — Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has introduced legislation that would give the state government broader power over compounding pharmacies, the governor's office announced.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — New England Compounding Center announced the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The filing seeks to establish a fund to compensate individuals and families affected by a nationwide meningitis outbreak. In papers filed with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts, the company said its goal is to provide a greater, quicker, fairer payout to its creditors than could be achieved through piecemeal litigation.
