Ahold has entered into an agreement to acquire Spar's business in the Czech Republic. The acquisition includes 50 stores of which 36 are compact hypers and 14 are supermarkets.

ZAANDAM, the Netherlands — Ahold has entered into an agreement to acquire Spar's business in the Czech Republic. The acquisition includes 50 stores of which 36 are compact hypers and 14 are supermarkets.

The acquisition, which has and enterprise value of CZK 5,245 million, will be funded from existing cash resources and is subject to merger clearance.

Ahold's shareholders approved the company's proposal to return €1 billion (US$1.4 billion) to shareholders by way of a capital repayment and reverse stock split.

ZAANDAM, the Netherlands — Ahold's shareholders on Tuesday approved the company's proposal to return €1 billion (US$1.4 billion) to shareholders by way of a capital repayment and reverse stock split.

 Shareholders voted at an extraordinary general meeting held at Ahold's headquarters. The meeting was attended by 65 shareholders, representing approximately 657 million votes.

OUD-BEIJERLAND, The Netherlands — New research published in the American Journal of Geriatrics on Monday found that more than 25% of bladder infections (cystitis) can be reduced with the regular use of cranberry concentrate supplements in vulnerable older people in nursing homes at high risk of urinary tract infections. 

More than 20% of these high-risk elderly did not develop any UTI’s at all when taking the cranberry capsule.

Ahold on Thursday announced consolidated net sales of €7.5 billion (U.S. $10.2 billion) for fourth quarter 2013, a decrease of 1.1% at constant exchange rates compared to fourth quarter 2012.

ZAANDAM, The Netherlands — Ahold on Thursday announced consolidated net sales of €7.5 billion (U.S. $10.2 billion) for fourth quarter 2013, a decrease of 1.1% at constant exchange rates compared to fourth quarter 2012. 

 For the full year 2013, consolidated net sales were $44.3 billion, an increase of 2% at constant exchange rates compared to 2012. 

In the United States sales in the fourth quarter were down 2.1%, reflecting a contracting food market and the sales effect of Hurricane Sandy last year, the international grocer stated.

Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold has bought back more than a quarter of the shares it intends to as part of a share-repurchase program announced earlier this year.

ZAANDAM, Netherlands — Dutch supermarket operator Royal Ahold has bought back more than a quarter of the shares it intends to as part of a share-repurchase program announced earlier this year.

The company said Monday that it had bought back 2.23 million for $38.8 million. The purchases are part of the $678 million buyback program announced in February and increased by $2.03 billion in June.

The total amount repurchased so far is 42.8 million shares, for a total price of $711.9 million.

AMSTERDAM — A liquor store chain owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold has introduced a "pick-and-mix" concept for specialty beers.

Gall & Gall, which operates stores across the Netherlands, is making all specialty beers available individually by the bottle while adding 30 new products and allowing customers to buy six bottles for the price of five. Beers are grouped according to flavor category, such as blonde, dubbel, dark, triple and "other special."

ZAANDAM, Netherlands — Ahold repurchased 3.3 million shares as part of a share-buyback program announced earlier this year, the Dutch supermarket operator said.

Ahold said it repurchased the shares at a price of $15.25 per share for a total of $50.2 million. The company operates the Stop & Shop, Giant Food of Landover, Md., and Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., supermarket chains and the Peapod grocery-delivery service in the United States, as well as several retail chains in Europe.

NEW YORK — Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Mylan have launched generic versions of Pfizer's Viagra in nearly a dozen European countries, the two companies said.

Teva, based in Jerusalem, announced the launch of generic sildenafil tablets in Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium and Denmark. The company already markets generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug in Spain and Canada.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Ahold has appointed the former head of one of its European supermarket chains to an executive position in its U.S. division.

Ahold USA said it appointed Jan van Dam as EVP supply chain and e-commerce, in which he will focus on supply chain for the company's four U.S. divisions, Stop & Shop in the New York area and New England, Giant-Landover and Giant-Carlisle. He will also be responsible for the company's e-commerce business with Andrew Parkinson, president and general manager of online grocery company Peapod, reporting to him.

AMSTERDAM, the Netherlands — Royal Ahold has appointed a new COO for its U.S. subsidiary, the company said Thursday.

Ahold, based in the Netherlands, announced that it had appointed James McCann as COO of Ahold USA, effective Jan. 1, 2013, replacing Carl Schlicker, who has announced his retirement. McCann, a 43-year-old native of the United Kingdom and currently Ahold's chief commercial and development officer who will continue as a member of the company's corporate board, began working for Ahold in 2011.
