MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, the nation's largest Hispanic-owned drugstore, has donated $15,470 to the Centro Mater Foundation. The employee/corporate gift provides critical funding to ensure needy children can attend Centro Mater's summer camp program.

For 45 years, Centro Mater has provided care, education, nourishment, health services and after-school programs to children in Miami-Dade of every race, faith and nationality from 6 weeks to 12 years of age.

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, which operates 31 stores, was the title sponsor of the American Diabetes Association annual Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes held this month.

The event was held Sept. 22 at Marlins Park in Miami and approximately $150,000 has been raised to date. There were approximately 1,100 participants.
 

MIAMI — Regional player Navarro Discount Pharmacy, which operates 31 store locations, has been approved by the Accreditation Commission for Health Care for renewal accreditation, the pharmacy retailer announced on Wednesday.

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, a Hispanic-owned pharmacy chain and an MBF Healthcare portfolio company, has announced the addition of a liquor store operation adjacent to an existing store in Miami Beach.

The 900-sq.-ft. liquor store, located adjacent to the store at 18500 Collins Ave. in Sunny Isles, has a separate entrance and is stocked with Navarro’s collection of domestic and imported wines and liquors.

NORWALK, Conn. — GE Capital Corporate Retail Finance announced it is administrative agent and sole lender on a $65 million asset-based credit facility for Navarro Discount Pharmacy. The financing will be used to refinance debt and for general corporate purposes.

“GE Capital understands retailing and has a great deal of experience financing drug stores,” Navarro Discount Pharmacy CEO Juan Ortiz said. “This allowed us to secure the right capital structure to help build our business.”

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy, a Hispanic-owned pharmacy retailer and an MBF Healthcare portfolio company, unveiled its private-label line, Vida Mia, at the Private Label Manufacturers Association Annual Trade Show in Chicago.

Navarro participated in the Latino Markets section of the show, displaying the new Hispanic-oriented store brand products from retailers. The 2011 theme of the show, which ran from Nov. 13 to 15, was "It’s a Store Brands World."

MIAMI — Regional pharmacy chain Navarro Discount Pharmacy, which currently has 29 stores, has named finance executive Juan Ortiz the company's CFO, to the position of CEO.

Ortiz succeeds CEO Steve Kaczynski, whose expertise in retail merchandising and marketing over the last 18 months has been instrumental in setting a strategic direction for the company and expanding its footprint in South Florida and nationally.

The retailer also plans to add in the fall an interactive social media retail forum, video, content on family and health-related topics, and reviews.

MIAMI — Navarro Discount Pharmacy has partnered with Continental National Bank of Miami to open an in-store bank branch inside Navarro's Hialeah Gardens store — marking the first bank in Florida to open an in-store bank in a drug store format.

The mini-bank branch will include two teller windows, an ATM and one service desk where customers can speak with a bank representative. Extended hours will be available for an added convenience.

MIAMI — Recognized for its commitment to the community, Navarro Discount Pharmacies won the Top 100 Minority Business Award for large-company community involvement from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce.

Navarro received the award during a special luncheon honoring other minority-owned businesses at Jungle Island in Miami on March 24.
