Fabricant has worked as the director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs at the Food and Drug Administration for the past three years, and prior to that was VP global government and scientific affairs for NPA, including serving as active CEO for several months in 2009.

An educational briefing, “Widespread Nutrient Shortfalls: A Public Health Crisis?” was held for Capitol Hill staffers Friday by the Congressional Dietary Supplement Caucus, in cooperation with the leading trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry — the American Herbal Products Association, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association, the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the Natural Products Association and the United Natural Products Alliance.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition released a report finding that dietary supplementation can save the healthcare system tens of billions over the next decade.

WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition on Thursday released a report finding that dietary supplementation can save the healthcare system tens of billions over the next decade. 

The report demonstrated that supplementation at preventive intake levels in high-risk populations can reduce the number of medical events associated with heart disease, age-related eye disease, diabetes and bone disease in the United States, representing the potential for significant cost savings.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., on Thursday introduced legislation that would retool the labeling requirements for dietary supplement manufacturers, require pre-market certification on new products and require successful efficacy trials.

The Council for Responsible Nutrition and the Natural Products Association announced they have met with the entire freshman class of the 113th Congress, including 83 offices in the House of Representatives and 14 offices in the Senate, as part of their educational efforts to ensure that newly elected members of Congress have accurate information about dietary supplements and their role in good health.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office on Monday advised the Food and Drug Administration to establish a time frame on New Dietary Ingredient guidance, as well as guidance clarifying whether a liquid product may be labeled and marketed as a dietary supplement or as a conventional food with added ingredients.

The convention had originally been scheduled for June 2013 in Las Vegas. The Natural Products Association and New Hope Natural Media have collaborated to produce the convention since 2008.

The Natural Products Association has named Jim LaValle as one of its 2011 Clinician of the Year award recipients.

CINCINNATI — The Natural Products Association has named Jim LaValle as one of its 2011 Clinician of the Year award recipients.

As previously reported by Drug Store News, LaValle will receive his award at the Natural Products Association MarketPlace in Las Vegas next month. He is an educator, clinician and founder of the LaValle Metabolic Institute, as well as the founder of Integrative Health Resources, a natural products industry consulting company. He has been integrating natural therapies into various medical and business models for 27 years.

WASHINGTON This year’s elections may prove to be a boon to the business of dietary supplements and other natural alternatives, according to John Gay, Natural Products Association executive director and CEO. “This was the most remarkable election in my 25 years in Washington,” he said, “and the effects will be felt almost immediately.”

For example, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., who must now step down as chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is seen as a potential positive for the industry, Gay said.

WASHINGTON The Natural Products Association on Wednesday challenged a Consumer Reports report in the September 2010 issue around dietary supplements as “an attack on dietary supplements -- including a call for additional regulation of the industry -- that presents a far from balanced and accurate representation of the industry or the laws that regulate it.”

Many of the products mentioned in the report, the NPA added, aren’t even dietary supplements but adulterated drugs being sold in violation of standing regulation.
