CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — Take Care Health Systems, which is owned by Walgreens, has made a “founder’s gift” of $100,000 to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation to help further nurse practitioner education by supporting the Foundation’s Scholarship and Grant Fund.

As leaders in primary and acute care, the 140,000 NPs in the United States play a vital role in the healthcare system and are a key component of the solution for increasing the public’s access to high-quality, affordable care post-reform.

Three bills that were introduced in California would recognize pharmacists as healthcare providers and would enable pharmacists, nurse practitioners and optometrists to practice to the full extent of their education and training.

The reality is that industry observers can expect to see more states considering similar measures as they all prepare a roadmap to lower costs by allowing pharmacists and NPs to practice at the top of their professions.

NORWALK, Conn. — UBM Medica has unveiled the results of its "Physician's Practice 2012 Staff Salary" survey.

UBM Medica found that the highest-paid nonphysicians on staff were physician assistants, earning an average $84,000 per year, followed by nurse practitioners, who earned an annual salary of $83,000. Despite PAs earning more per year, UBM Medica found that NPs enjoyed more employment opportunities: 35% of practices are employing one NP, compared with only 25% of practices who employ a PA.

ORLANDO, Fla. — With retail clinic sales rising an estimated 81% per year since 2005 and sales expansion projected to continue in the coming years, according to recent research, The Drug Store News Group and Retail Clinician magazine, in partnership with the Convenient Care Association, will host the fourth annual Retail Clinician Education Congress in August.


WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT — That Medicare doesn’t universally cover the use of retail clinics — and even create a structure that encourages their use for certain services — is a key symptom of what is wrong with the U.S. healthcare system.
