ALEXANDRIA, Va. — An amendment to the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations bill that would prohibit the FDA from preventing an individual not in the business of importing a prescription drug from importing prescription drugs from Canada, has sparked concern with the National Association of Chain Drug Stores.

WASHINGTON — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores is participating in the U.S. Senate Health Fair, held here on Oct. 13 and 14, in the U.S. Senate office complex.

NACDS coordinated an exhibit to demonstrate the importance of pharmacist-patient interaction and the valuable role that pharmacy plays in helping patients take their medication properly.

A group representing independent pharmacies is urging Congress to cut the deficit by reducing healthcare expenditures, but “without compromising patients’ access to their pharmacy of choice or harming local jobs.” In a letter sent last month to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, the National Community Pharmacists Association suggested increasing use of generic drugs, encouraging such services as medication therapy management, collecting manufacturer rebates, and allowing patients to choose their pharmacies and avoid requirements to use mail-order services.

If Express Scripts and Medco are right about the projected closing of what their opponents are calling the “mega-merger,” then we might be looking at dozens of more weeks of this.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The charitable arm of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced 12 academic institutions have received funding to expand community pharmacy residencies for recent pharmacy school graduates.

The NACDS Foundation said that the following schools received funding for the Community Pharmacy Residency Expansion Project:

• Concordia University;

• Creighton University;

• Ferris State University;

• Midwestern University (Glendale);
