WASHINGTON — The Senate voted 55-45 Thursday to scrap an appropriations bill amendment that would have allowed personal importation of prescription drugs.

The amendment had been proposed for the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill. The Senate's vote drew applause from an organization representing retail pharmacy chains.

A group representing independent pharmacies is urging Congress to cut the deficit by reducing healthcare expenditures, but “without compromising patients’ access to their pharmacy of choice or harming local jobs.”

A group representing independent pharmacies is urging Congress to cut the deficit by reducing healthcare expenditures, but “without compromising patients’ access to their pharmacy of choice or harming local jobs.” In a letter sent last month to the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, the National Community Pharmacists Association suggested increasing use of generic drugs, encouraging such services as medication therapy management, collecting manufacturer rebates, and allowing patients to choose their pharmacies and avoid requirements to use mail-order services.

The feathers continued to fly last week. First, NACDS debuted a new print ad in the Washington Post, then news broke that half the states in the country are against the $29 billion ESI-Medco mega-merger.

If Express Scripts and Medco are right about the projected closing of what their opponents are calling the “mega-merger,” then we might be looking at dozens of more weeks of this.

Jim Matheson, D-Utah, which would require a mandatory track-and-trace system — a move that could cost the typical pharmacy chain millions of dollars to implement across all stores.

The charitable arm of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced 12 academic institutions have received funding to expand community pharmacy residencies for recent pharmacy school graduates.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The charitable arm of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced 12 academic institutions have received funding to expand community pharmacy residencies for recent pharmacy school graduates.

The NACDS Foundation said that the following schools received funding for the Community Pharmacy Residency Expansion Project:

  • Concordia University;

  • Creighton University;

  • Ferris State University;

  • Midwestern University (Glendale);

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, a national professional association of pharmacists and healthcare practitioners, on Wednesday announced the appointment of Edith Rosato as CEO.

Rosato will take over from long-time CEO Judith Cahill, who announced her plans to retire earlier this year.

In her new role as CEO, Rosato will be responsible for all program, financial and operational aspects of the academy, including a $10 million budget and staff of nearly 40. She will start her position in November.
