PITTSBURGH — U.S. District Court judge Cathy Bissoon on Monday dismissed many of the claims levied against Express Scripts by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the National Community Pharmacist Association and nine independent pharmacies, regarding the allegedly anti-competitive nature of Express Scripts' merger with Medco.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores urged House and Senate leaders to support bipartisan legislation that would level the playing field between brick-and-mortar retail businesses — including community pharmacies — and Internet and other remote sellers. The legislation also would give states the ability potentially to collect millions of dollars in sales tax annually.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced on Wednesday that it has submitted a statement to the Senate Caucus on International Narcotics Control, detailing chain pharmacy’s engagement in the prevention of prescription drug abuse, and its commitment to maintaining patients’ ready access to medications vital for pain management and for treatment regimens.

NACDS submitted its statement for the Caucus’ hearing on “Responding to the Prescription Drug Abuse Epidemic.”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation on Thursday announced the 2012-2013 inaugural class for the foundation’s Faculty Scholars Program. 

Launched earlier this year, the Faculty Scholars Program is designed to educate assistant professors from U.S. schools and colleges of pharmacy about designing, implementing and publishing community-pharmacy-based patient care research. Educational programming was designed in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh, under the leadership of Melissa Somma McGivney.

ALEXANDRIA, Va.  — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores announced on Tuesday the donation of 9,500 lbs. of consumer goods to be dispersed to various charitable organizations throughout the Denver area, following the completion of the recent NACDS Marketplace Conference.

NACDS Marketplace exhibitors donated leftover products ranging from cosmetics, health and hygiene products, food and beverages and household supplies, to other consumer products available in retail pharmacies.

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT'S IMPORTANT — The Supreme Court's decision last week to maintain the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act doesn't mean much. Not really. Because without regard of who's paying for what services, more people will need more health care in 2014 than people need health care today.
