WASHINGTON — The Council for Responsible Nutrition Foundation's “Life…supplemented” campaign on Thursday announced that its mobile application, WannaBeWell, is the featured “App of the Month” in the May/June issue of Weight Watchers magazine. The bi-monthly magazine, which aids its readers in their weight loss goals through cooking, nutrition, health, fashion and beauty articles, is affiliated with the Weight Watchers weight loss program and boasts a readership of 9.8 million readers.

NEW YORK — Duane Reade on Wednesday announced the launch of its first mobile application for iOS devices. The free app, available in the iTunes store, will facilitate and further enhance customer access to Duane Reade’s pharmacy services, photo printers, prescription refills, Balance Rewards offers, account information and in-store maps.  

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The developer of a retail app is partnering with marketing company Baesman Group to offer a location-based, geo-fencing mobile app that it said would drive in-store traffic by sending sales and promotional offers to consumers' smartphones.

After downloading the app, which has a built-in GPS system, users opt-in to retail brands and choose how often they would like to receive offers. Once near a store, the app will contact their smartphone with a discount or promotion designed specifically for them, which they can redeem immediately.

Whatever dazzling visions science fiction may offer of the widgets of the future, the long, uphill road of technology inevitably leads to the smaller and the simpler. The horse and carriage gave way to the automobile; vacuum tubes gave way to transistors; and computers that took up entire rooms and required intricate climate-control technologies now fit in one’s pocket. 


Technologies used in health care have undergone a similar transition, and much of that has happened in the last few years thanks to the spread of mobile technology.
