A new report by Accenture ACN states that the number of U.S. retail-based health clinics will double and drive $800 in annual cost savings by 2015.

Well, it's not just DSN saying it anymore. The massive ramp up is happening and, according to Accenture, the number of retail clinics is expected to increase 20% to 25% per year between now and 2015 and double from 1,418 to 2,868 clinics in that time period.

A new report by Accenture ACN states that the number of U.S. retail-based health clinics will double and drive $800 million in annual cost savings by 2015.

The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation created by CVS Caremark, will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross to support the organization's tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma and Texas, the company announced on Thursday.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, a private foundation created by CVS Caremark, will donate $25,000 to the American Red Cross to support the organization's tornado relief efforts in Oklahoma and Texas, the company announced on Thursday.  

In addition, the Charitable Trust will match tornado relief donations to the Red Cross from CVS Caremark's employees up to an additional $25,000, resulting in a potential combined donation from the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust and CVS Caremark colleagues of at least $75,000.

This month Walgreens announced that it would begin to offer chronic care services at its Take Care Clinics. Its biggest competitor, MinuteClinic, made a similar announcement about a year ago. With full implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the people paying the bills are going to get a good look at what retail clinics can do to lower costs and improve outcomes.

A new Kalorama Information report found that most patients — 91% — who had used a retail clinic were either satisfied or very satisfied with their visit.

The findings are in line with prior studies, which have long been reported by Drug Store News, and are yet further evidence that retail clinics are playing a vital role in the U.S. healthcare system.

MinuteClinic president and SVP/associate chief medical officer of CVS Caremark, Andrew Sussman, attended two separate healthcare events in London last week to discuss how MinuteClinic is improving care and access at substantially lower cost.

This is important because, regardless of whether a country has universal healthcare or not, someone has to pay for it and accessibility can still be an issue. Interestingly, a British supermarket began testing the concept of an in-store physician-staffed clinic back in 2008 in an effort to improve access. 
A key reason: Its supermarkets are often situated in a convenient location with public transport links and ample parking.

MinuteClinic, part of CVS Caremark, said sports physicals are offered seven days a week with no appointment necessary at more than 625 CVS/pharmacy stores across the country, and the collaboration, with Pop Warner Little Scholars, is designed to offer parents convenient and affordable options to obtain required sports physicals for their children.
