NEW YORK — Legislation recently introduced in the Senate aims to address the issue of drug shortages.

The Preserving Access to Life-Saving Medications Act, introduced in February by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., would require drug manufacturers to inform the Food and Drug Administration when supplies of a drug may be running low, allowing the agency to inform hospitals and attempt to address shortages.

The bill currently has nine cosponsors and is under review by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, according to congressional records.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Midwestern retailer Roundy’s Supermarkets has partnered with Grandville Printing to digitally print weekly in-store shelf tags and price signs, Roundy’s said Wednesday.

The chain said it had fully deployed the GPC Nexgen program, whereby shelf tags and price signs are delivered pre-burst and boxed in planogram order by aisle for each store, thus giving the retailer's pricing and marketing departments the ability to make changes faster and benefit from relevant messages to consumers at the shelf.

Diabetes patients who adhere to their medication therapies have a significantly lower risk of hospitalization, according to a new study scheduled for presentation this week at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s 23rd annual meeting and showcase in Minneapolis.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Diabetes patients who adhere to their medication therapies have a significantly lower risk of hospitalization, according to a new study scheduled for presentation this week at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s 23rd annual meeting and showcase in Minneapolis.

The study, conducted by pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics using data from more than 15,000 patients, found that medication adherence among diabetes patients cut the risk of hospitalization by 31%, compared with patients who were not compliant.

A new partnership with Gold Standard/Elsevier has solidified Thrifty White Pharmacy’s efforts to bring big-city services to its small-town customer base, which is spread across five states: Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Iowa and Montana. 


The Maple Grove, Minn.-based chain of 84 stores recently licensed Alchemy, a new drug database and decision support solution, for all of its pharmacy and telepharmacy dispensing systems. The new partnership will enable the chain to streamline its prescription filling process and provide drug information to pharmacists instantly.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — 3M announced that it has launched the first-of-its-kind Scotch Magic eco-friendly tape.

Scotch Magic eco-friendly tape — which includes a refillable dispenser, packaging and tape — is made from more than 75% renewable or recycled materials, the company reported. The boxed refill roll, including packaging, is made from more than 65% renewable or recycled materials.

CVS Caremark announced on Friday that it has agreed to pay $17.5 million, to be allocated among the federal government and 10 participating states, to resolve a civil complaint concerning how its CVS/pharmacy retail pharmacies submitted reimbursement claims in certain states for prescriptions filled for "dual eligible" patients who have coverage under both Medicaid and a third-party insurance plan.

The study, published in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings, tracked the pharmacy records of 209 patients ages 60 to 86 years in Olmsted County, Minn., who were asked how often they missed doses or didn’t take their drugs at all and why.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target Clinic is slated to open eight new locations in three markets.

The clinics will open in Target stores in the Twin Cities, Chicago and Ft. Lauderdale-Davie areas by the end of July, bringing the total clinic count to 44. The first new Target Clinic location opened March 2 in Minnesota.

Target said expanding its clinic business will increase access to healthcare services.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — 3M's skin and wound care division has launched an easy-to-apply cream that is designed to relieve skin discomforts caused by fungal infections.

New Cavilon antifungal cream, which is available in 2-oz. and 5-oz. tubes, is enriched with water-repelling ingredients, including 2% miconazole nitrate, an active ingredient that has been clinically proven to treat tinea corporis (ringworm), tinea pedis (athlete’s foot) and tinea cruris (jock itch), 3M said. The product also is approved for use on fungal infections caused by Candida albicans.

The company said the needles would give diabetes patients a high-quality and cost-effective option for their pen needle supplies. Before, pen needles were dispensed in quantities of 100.

UltiMed said its needles, manufactured in its De Smet, S.D., factory, are the only ones assembled in the United States.
