Upsher-Smith Laboratories on Monday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement under which New Jersey-based Vertical Pharmaceuticals has acquired Upsher-Smith's rights to Divigel (estradiol gel) 0.1%, Nexa Plus Rx Prenatal Vitamin, and Provella, a probiotic dietary supplement.

MAPLE GROVE, Minn. — Upsher-Smith Laboratories on Monday announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement under which New Jersey-based Vertical Pharmaceuticals has acquired Upsher-Smith's rights to Divigel (estradiol gel) 0.1%, Nexa Plus Rx Prenatal Vitamin, and Provella, a probiotic dietary supplement. As part of the transaction, Upsher-Smith has transferred the new drug application for Divigel to Vertical Pharmaceuticals.

Supervalu on Thursday reorganized its operations in an effort to streamline the independent business organization.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Supervalu on Thursday reorganized its operations in an effort to streamline the independent business organization. As part of the new structure, Supervalu's independent business will consolidate from three regions to two regions, forming new East and West teams. The new East and West independent business regions will be located in Mechanicsville, Va., and Hopkins, Minn., respectively. 

To lead the new organizations, Supervalu has named Kevin Kemp president of the East region and Bill Chew president of the West region.

Men and women with large waist circumferences — even those with a healthy body mass index — are more likely to die younger, and were more likely to die from such illnesses as heart disease, respiratory problems and cancer after accounting for BMI, smoking, alcohol use and physical activity, according to a study led by a Mayo Clinic researcher.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Grocer Hy-Vee, which operates 235 stores in eight states, is planning a major expansion of its Minnesota operations into the Twin Cities market.

The proposed expansion would add several new stores to the Twin Cities market per year, over the next several years. Each store opened will be approximately 90,000-square foot, with an investment of approximately $14 million to $16 million, creating anywhere from 400 to 550 new jobs.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Regional player Lewis Drug has acquired Throndset pharmacies in Jackson and Lakefield, Minn., according to a local news report.

The transaction is expected to take effect April 7 and, according to the Lakefield Standard, Lewis Drug will retain all of the employees.

Target is looking to open a new, smaller — much smaller — store in the base of an apartment building currently under construction near the University of Minnesota campus that will serve as a test for the new format dubbed TargetExpress, the New York Times has reported.

Clearly, the trend toward smaller continues. First it was Walmart Express and then CityTarget’s 80,000- to 125,000-sq.-ft. footprint, and now the even tinier TargetExpress. In fact, taking a look back at DSN’s “12 for 2012” story, which examined trends and issues impacting retail pharmacy in 2012, smaller formats were highlighted as one trend to watch. Obviously, it’s still one to watch.

NEW YORK — Diabetes organizations in several cities are getting a boost in funding from a Danish drug maker that specializes in developing treatments for the disease.

Novo Nordisk said it would provide funding to groups in Seattle; Portland, Ore.; and Rochester, Minn., as part of the Novo Nordisk Community Care initiative. The initiative provides funding to nonprofits that support educational programs for people with Type 2 diabetes.
