MINNEAPOLIS — Target has a deal with pop music group Mindless Behavior to let fans write lyrics for the band, the mass merchandise retailer said Thursday.

The contest, called "Your Lyrics, Their Voices," gives fans the opportunity to write their own song lyrics for a verse of a special fan edition of the title track for the album "All Around the World."

MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. reported net sales of nearly $6 billion in January, the company said Thursday.

The mass merchandise retailer reported sales of $5.97 billion, a 29.6% increase over the $4.6 billion reported in January 2012. Comps for the period, which ended Saturday, increased 3.1%.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target will dedicate about 10,000 sq. ft. at nine of its stores in the Detroit area to fresh groceries, the mass merchandise chain said Monday.

The company said the remodeling effort was part of its ongoing effort to remodel stores across the country, and the new layout also would include reinventions in departments such as beauty, home, shoes and baby. Fresh foods will include produce, packaged meat and prepackaged baked goods, as well as frozen and dry food offerings.

MINNEAPOLIS — Yoplait is marketing Greek yogurt to a younger audience with a new product line, the company said.

The company announced the launch of Yoplait Pro-Force, a Greek yogurt with twice the protein of most kids yogurts, available in strawberry and mixed-berry flavors.

MINNEAPOLIS — In a move that will reunite all Albertsons stores under one operator, Supervalu on Thursday morning announced a definitive agreement under which it will sell 877 stores across the Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market banners and related Osco and Sav-on in-store pharmacies to AB Acquisition, an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management, in a transaction valued at $3.3 billion.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target Corp. has launched a campaign to price match online retailers, the mass-merchandise retailer said Tuesday.

The Minneapolis-based retailer said it planned to price match online retailers like Amazon.com, Walmart.com, BestBuy.com and Toysrus.com year-round; Target stores would also price match items on the company's own website.

MINNEAPOLIS — Target announced plans to open a new store in Baltimore by October 2013. The retail giant has said approximately 200 new team members will be hired for the new location, part of the Canton Crossing Shopping Center on Boston Street.

MINNEAPOLIS — Supervalu on Friday confirmed that a previously announced review of strategic alternatives is proceeding, sparking a slight run on the company's stock. As of early Monday afternoon, Supervalu was trading at $2.53 per share, up 6.3%. 

"The company continues to be in active discussion with several parties," Supervalu stated. 

The Wall Street Journal on Sunday reported that Cerberus Capital Management and Supervalu had been negotiating a potential acquisition deal through the weekend.

MINNEAPOLIS — Nash Finch, a Minneapolis-based food distributor, has announced that Kevin Elliott has been appointed EVP, president and COO of Nash Finch Wholesale/Retail.

Elliott previously served as SVP of merchandising, logistics and marketing at 7-Eleven. Elliott worked at 7-Eleven from 2001 to 2010, where he was responsible for overseeing the corporate store and franchise operations as well as 7-Eleven’s national distribution network comprised of 26 distribution centers.

MINNEAPOLIS — Novelty gift company 30 Watt introduced its latest prank gift for the outlet-challenged. Billed as a “solution” for hard-to-reach electrical devices, Connect-A-Cord is actually 50 1-ft. sections of extension cord.


The gag gift’s packaging boasts that it “comes with an optional contractor case for tangle-free storage,” but when the recipient opens up the Prank Pack, they will discover the bright yellow flaps inside reading “Prank You!” 


MINNEAPOLIS — A 2.9% third-quarter same-store sales increase and the sale of its credit card business pushed Target’s third-quarter profit up 17.6% to 96 cents a share.

Total sales increased 3.4% to $16.6 billion in the third quarter due to the 2.9% comp increase and the benefit of a net increase of 18 stores compared to the prior year. Target ended the period with 1,781 stores and was up against a challenging prior year comparison when comps advanced 4.3%.
