Brynwood Partners VI announced that High Ridge Brands, its portfolio company and owner of the North American Zest personal cleansing franchise, signed a purchase agreement with Unilever to acquire the Alberto VO5 brand and marketing rights in the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as the rights to the Rave brand and marketing rights worldwide.

The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has named Ralph Neas as its new president and CEO.

EXECUTIVE NEWS — The Generic Pharmaceutical Association has named Ralph Neas as its new president and CEO. Neas, currently president and CEO of the National Coalition on Health Care, replaces Kathleen Jaeger, who stepped down as president and CEO of GPhA in May 2010 after eight years with the organization. The GPhA said it planned to spend September introducing Neas to stakeholders in a broad outreach effort.

Consumers still have a sweet tooth despite a sour economy. U.S. confectionery sales at food, drug and mass stores continue to grow at a pace of 4.2%, outpacing overall store sales, according to data from the National Confectioners Association.

Chocolate is the key growth driver, with sales up nearly 8% in the drug channel, according to SymphonyIRI Group data for the 52-week period ended July 11. Sweet and savory combinations are one of the segment’s top trends, according to NCA.

The new detergent, which features a skin-friendly fresh scent that’s hypoallergenic and clinically tested to be good to sensitive skin, is a scented alternative to Arm & Hammer’s Perfume and Dye Free laundry detergent.

To be honest, that’s not exactly what we had expected when we headed to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores’ Pharmacy and Technology Conference a day earlier. Hurricane Irene — which had already dampened our travel plans — also had dampened our expectations.

According to SymphonyIRI Group, toothpaste sales for the 52 weeks ended Aug. 7 at food, drug and mass (excluding Walmart) rose nearly 5% to $1.35 billion. Those toothpastes that experienced the greatest growth were those that touted such benefits as whitening and easing tooth sensitivity.

Temperatures eclipsed 90 degrees Fahrenheit for the second annual Jersey Shore Undy 5000 5-km race held here last month, where Team Dulcolax joined 665 people who turned out to support the colon cancer awareness-raising event.

LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Temperatures eclipsed 90 degrees Fahrenheit for the second annual Jersey Shore Undy 5000 5-km race held here last month, where Team Dulcolax joined 665 people who turned out to support the colon cancer awareness-raising event. All told, participants generated more than $80,000 to help fight colon cancer. 


A portion of the funds raised from the Jersey Shore Undy 5000 will be locally distributed to fund services for those diagnosed with colon cancer.

In May, Teva beat out Valeant’s $5.7 billion offer to buy Frazier, Pa.-based Cephalon with a $6.8 billion offer of its own, acquiring Cephalon’s hefty pipeline in the process. And last month, Teva bought Taiyo Pharmaceutical Industry, Japan’s third-largest generics company, for $934 million.
