LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., will focus on the employment of transitioning veterans and their family members as it designates March as its Military Appreciation Month, the Ahold USA banner said Friday.

Giant-Landover will work with the USO of Metropolitan Washington and USO Delaware for a third year, sponsoring an in-store giving campaign that will support programs from both across the Mid-Atlantic region.

PLEASANTON, Calif. — Safeway and ExxonMobil on Wednesday announced a new loyalty program that will award customers in the Mid-Atlantic region Reward Points, redeemable at any ExxonMobil station, for products purchased at Safeway.  

According to a recent Safeway survey, one-third of families go out of their way to look for deals because saving money is important to them. Nearly three out of four people will drive out of their way to purchase more affordable gas, and 76% of consumers said they would change where they grocery shop and purchase gas to save money.

Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., donated $25,000 to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to support children in need across the Mid-Atlantic region this week, the Ahold-owned chain said.

LANDOVER, Md. — Supermarket chain Giant Food of Landover, Md., donated $25,000 to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to support children in need across the Mid-Atlantic region this week, the Ahold-owned chain said.

Giant, also known as Giant-Landover to distinguish it from Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa. — also owned by Ahold — said it would collect toys at all of its 170 stores during the holiday season.

Giant-Landover operates stores in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

Retail sales were down slightly in October on a month-to-month basis while increasing on an annual basis, reflecting Hurricane Sandy and uncertainty in Washington, according to the National Retail Federation.

WASHINGTON — Retail sales were down slightly in October on a month-to-month basis while increasing on an annual basis, reflecting Hurricane Sandy and uncertainty in Washington, according to the National Retail Federation.

The retailing trade group said Wednesday that October retail sales — with exception to automobiles, gas stations and restaurants — decreased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from September while increasing nearly 4% unadjusted year over year.

CINCINNATI — Kroger announced that Tim Brown now will be responsible for stores in western Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri as president of the company's Delta division.

Brown, 52, has been VP operations in the company's Delta division, based in Roanoke, Va., since 2011; before that, he served as the Mid-Atlantic division's VP merchandising since 2009.
