Drug maker Perrigo has filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of a generic topical ointment for treating acne in adolescents and adults, the company said Wednesday.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Drug maker Perrigo has filed with the Food and Drug Administration for approval of a generic topical ointment for treating acne in adolescents and adults, the company said Wednesday.

Perrigo said it filed for approval of clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide gel in the 1.2%/2.5% strengths. The drug is used to treat acne in patients 12 years and older.

Spartan Stores and Nash Finch Company on Tuesday announced the completion of their merger.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Spartan Stores and Nash Finch Company on Tuesday announced the completion of their merger. Spartan Stores will use the corporate name of SpartanNash Company, with the official name change to SpartanNash expected to become effective at the annual shareholders meeting in May 2014. 

The combined company will continue to conduct business as Spartan Stores, Nash Finch and MDV in their respective markets.

Diplomat has joined the limited distribution network for a rare form of blood cancer drug marketed by Johnson & Johnson and Pharmacyclics.

FLINT, Mich. — Diplomat has joined the limited distribution network for a rare form of blood cancer drug marketed by Johnson & Johnson and Pharmacyclics.

The specialty pharmacy said Thursday that J&J subsidiary Janssen Biotech and Pharmacyclics had added it to the limited distribution network for Imbruvica (ibrutinib), which the Food and Drug Administration approved this week for mantle cell lymphoma.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Meijer will match donations to a program to provide food for poor families later this month to mark the program's fifth year, the mass merchandiser said.

The Midwestern retailer said it would match two-to-one every customer's $10 Simply Give donation made between Nov. 15 and Nov. 16 to celebrate the program's five years of existence. The program has generated more than $6.5 million for local food pantries, equal to 39 million meals. One-in-six families in the country is considered food-insecure, according to Feeding America.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and the University of Michigan and published in the journal Pediatrics, found that hospitalizations for whooping cough, also known as pertussis, were lower than would be expected if they had not been inoculated.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Mass merchandise chain Meijer operates one of the largest all-clean diesel vehicle fleets in North America, the company said Monday.

The Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer, which runs 203 stores in the Midwest and Kentucky, said its fleet used various technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint by nearly 60%. The company, which has 170 semi trucks, said its fleet was the first in North America to implement the federal clean emissions standards that feature near-zero emissions technology.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Perrigo Co. for treating heart disease, the company said Monday.

The FDA approved Perrigo's nitroglycerin lingual spray in the 400-mcg-per-spray strength. The drug is used to relieve attacks of or prevent angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease.

ALLEGAN, Mich. — Perrigo Co. has hired a former Food and Drug Administration official for its regulatory department, the drug maker said Friday.

The Allegan, Mich.-based drug maker announced the appointment of Keith Webber as head of regulatory review, a position in which he will start on Oct. 21. Webber previously served as acting director of the FDA's Office of Pharmaceutical Science, part of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, which regulates prescription and OTC drugs. He also served as director of the Office of Generic Drugs.
