Like all of Walgreens' flagships, the new Los Angeles store pushes the envelope on what consumers would expect to find in a typical drug store. In this segment of DSNTV Virtual Store Tours, DSN editor Rob Eder travels to Hollywood to meet with key members of Walgreens' merchandising and store design teams for a firsthand look at the new store.

In December, Walgreens celebrated a major milestone when it opened store No. 8,000 in Los Angeles at the famed corner of Sunset and Vine. The store, Walgreens first West Coast-based flagship location, is the site of the former Tower Record store and perhaps more notably, the site of the former Schwab's drug store, where such Hollywood starlets as Lana Turner are rumored to have been discovered.

Warmer spring weather spurred continued consumer spending and activity this March. According to the National Retail Federation, March retail sales — which exclude automobiles, gas stations and restaurants — increased 0.8% adjusted month-to-month and 1.6% unadjusted year-over-year.

Rite Aid on Monday announced that David Abelman, a retail veteran with more than 25 years’ experience, is joining the company as SVP brand development and innovation. His appointment is effective immediately.

In this newly created position, Abelman will be responsible for overseeing the continued development of Rite Aid brand products as well as identifying and implementing new innovations to enhance and grow Rite Aid’s business. He will report to Ken Martindale, Rite Aid’s president and COO.

Where would the candy category be without seasonal merchandise? Seasonal candy sales are a driving force in the category, with seasonal period sales accounting for 55% of the confectionary pie, according to the National Confectioners Association. Unique seasonal in-and-out items shaped and colored specifically for a season represent 22% of category sales. In 2014, NCA estimates that seasonal candy sales will account for $7 billion.

Walgreens posted a first-quarter sales increase of 5.9% to a record $18.3 billion. Front-end comparable store sales for the quarter increased 2.4% in the first quarter, customer traffic in comparable stores increased 0.2% and basket size increased 2.2%, while total sales in comparable stores increased 5.4%. Prescription sales, which accounted for 64.7% of sales in the quarter ended Nov. 30, increased 7.3%, while prescription sales in comparable stores increased 7.2%.

Front-end comps are up. Prescription comps are up. Business is good. And that's not the story. Rather, that's the kind of results you can expect from the story. The story is Walgreens is priming a three-pistoned growth engine that will quite likely drive what pharmacy will look like in the future — an efficient global supply chain beast that feeds a front-end that commands traffic in its own right, and a back-end that demands healthcare payers pay attention to how Walgreens can help improve adherence and patient-care metrics. So, how can suppliers better align with Walgreens?

Rite Aid is extending store hours and featuring gift items as the holiday shopping season comes to an end, the retail pharmacy chain said Friday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid is extending store hours and featuring gift items as the holiday shopping season comes to an end, the retail pharmacy chain said Friday.

The company said it would extend store hours through Monday, as well as keeping some stores open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, including some 24-hour stores.

Many of Rite Aid's stores will open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Many of Rite Aid's stores will open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thanksgiving, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.

Rite Aid, which operates about 4,600 stores, said the move was designed to give shoppers a head start on Black Friday shopping, citing National Retail Federation figures indicating that up to 140 million shoppers will visit retailers nationwide during the weekend. Still, store hours will vary, and many pharmacies will close at 3 p.m., the company said.

“If your brand was delisted tomorrow, would anybody care?”

That’s the cold, hard question retailers and manufacturers need to confront. That was a key message Shannon Curtin, Walgreens group VP beauty, personal care and seasonal, had for attendees of a special one-day summit co-hosted by The Drug Store News Group and the Mack Elevation Forum in August.

“If your brand was delisted tomorrow, would anybody care?”

That’s the cold, hard question retailers and manufacturers need to confront. When there is no care, brands simply do not exist,” she said.

Walgreens recently fine-tuned its merchandising leadership structure, announcing a few key changes in the lineup.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens recently fine-tuned its merchandising leadership structure, most notably elevating Jim Jensen to VP daily living implementation and space planning, where he will be looking at maximizing merchandising initiatives against space optimization in the stores. Moe Alkemade will assume the role of general merchandise manager handling seasonal, sundries and consumables; and Beth Stiller has been named group VP retail brands and global sourcing. 

All appointments are effective Nov. 4.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO — Drug Store News has learned that Mary Kelly has been appointed EVP and chief merchandising officer at Rexall Pharma Plus. Kelly, who has more than 26 years experience leading business teams in Canada and the United States, joins the company after four years at Shoppers Drug Mart, most recently as EVP, merchandising and category management. Prior to that, Kelly served 17 years at Target in a  variety of key leadership positions in merchandising and pharmacy, and at Revco Drug Stores and Eli Lilly before that.

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Shopko will use proceeds from sales of some women's clothing to support breast cancer research, the mass merchandiser said.

As part of the "Support the Cure" program, purchases of select women's activewear and accessories from West Coast Novelty Group will help support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Shopko is partnering with both for the fundraising effort.

The retail industry added 43,600 jobs last month, particularly in general merchandise, electronics and clothing, according to an industry trade group.

WASHINGTON — The retail industry added 43,600 jobs last month, particularly in general merchandise, electronics and clothing, according to an industry trade group.

The numbers were based on calculations from the National Retail Federation, out of a total 169,000 jobs that the Bureau of Labor Statistics said the economy added in August, bringing the country's unemployment rate down to 7.3%.

Still, according to the National Retail Federation, July retail sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) increased 0.3% seasonally adjusted from June and increased 5% unadjusted year-over-year.
