NEW YORK — The alleged health benefits of a Mediterranean diet have been touted for years, but a new study adds weight to the claims.

The study, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that a traditional Mediterranean diet — characterized as rich in extra-virgin olive oil, nuts, fruits and vegetables and including moderate wine consumption, as well as low intake of dairy products, red meat, processed meats and sweets — reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — A frozen pizza brand has reformulated the sauce used in its Brick Oven pizza varieties.

Freschetta said the sauce used on its pizzas now feature sea salt and olive oil. In the brand's Brick Oven line, the five Italian cheese, pepperoni and Italian style cheese, zesty Italian style supreme, spinach and mushroom, and three meat medley varieties now feature sea salt and olive oil. The sea salt and olive oil sauce will be incorporated into the Naturally Rising line of Freschetta pizzas later this year, the company noted.

TAUNTON, Mass. — Tribe Mediterranean Foods is launching four new flavors to its hummus line, the company said.

The new hummus flavors include Cilantro Chimichurri, which includes cilantro and spices and is inspired by South American cuisine; Olive Tapenade, with chopped Mediterranean olives and herbs; Savory Mushroom, described as "earthy and flavorful with a rich assortment of spices"; and Mediterranean Style, with olive oil and paprika.

GLENDALE HEIGHTS, Ill. — Kronos is expanding its bread products line with its acquisition of Pita King's commercial baking assets.

The acquisition marks Kronos' foray into flatbread production. The company, which currently markets such items as Mediterranean Chef gyro family meal kit and Kronos Fillo Classics, now will market Pita King's authentic Middle Eastern pocket breads in a variety of sizes and formulations, including white and whole wheat.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Hummus brand Sabra is looking to boost its portfolio by introducing new snacks.

Sabra said it will be introducing a salsa line, which will include classic, southwestern style, home-style and chunky pico de gallo flavors; Greek yogurt veggie dips in roasted garlic, spinach and artichoke, sun dried tomato, and onion and fresh herbs varieties; and guacamole and new hummus flavors, including basil pesto and buffalo style blends.

The array of new products will be rolled out nationwide in the coming months.

GLENVIEW, Ill. — Kraft Foods has put the spotlight on Athenos with the brand's first-ever advertising campaign.

Athenos' portfolio, which includes Greek yogurt, hummus and pita chips, is being brought to life with a campaign highlighting yiayias, or Greek grandmothers, and their no-nonsense, unsolicited opinions of the world. The ads, created by Droga5, show that while yiayias criticize their grandchildren for their attire, lack of job or living with their significant other before marriage, the women do approve of Athenos products.
