HYDERABAD, India A generic drug maker has entered an agreement to purchase another drug maker's U.S. penicillin site.

Dr. Reddy's and GlaxoSmithKline have inked a deal in which GSK will transfer ownership of its penicillin manufacturing site in Bristol, Tenn., and rights for the Augmentin and Amoxil brands in the United States to Dr. Reddy’s, an India-based drug maker.

This transaction is expected to close within the first half of calendar year 2011. Further financial terms and conditions of the agreement were not disclosed.

HAYWARD, Calif. A generic drug maker confirmed a patent challenge for its version of a branded cholesterol drug that recently was submitted to the Food and Drug Administration for approval.

Impax said Daiichi Sankyo and Genzyme are seeking to block Impax's generic version of Welchol (colesevelam HCl) for oral suspension, in 3.75 g/packet and 1.875 g/packet strengths. The two drug makers filed suit for patent infringement against Impax in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware after being notified that the FDA accepted Impax's ANDA for the drug.

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. Johnson & Johnson is recalling millions of packages of over-the-counter drugs for allergies and pain due to manufacturing problems, according to published reports.

The New York Times reported Tuesday that J&J would recall 4 million packages of cherry- and grape-flavored Children’s Benadryl (diphenhydramine) tablets for allergies and 800,000 bottles of children’s Motrin (ibuprofen), a pain drug.

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. Par Pharmaceutical has begun shipments of a generic treatment for asthma, the drug maker said Monday.

Par announced that it started shipping zafirlukast tablets in the 10-mg and 20-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of AstraZeneca’s Accolate.

Accolate has sales of $50 million in the United States per year, according to IMS Health.

RICHMOND, Texas Drug maker OcuSoft has launched a prescription supplement designed to enhance botulinum toxin injections, the company said.

 

OcuSoft announced the availability of Zytaze in several chain drug stores around the country.

 

 

The drug is designed to extend the duration of botulinum toxin treatments, such as Allergan’s Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA), and reports have indicated that it extends them by almost 25%.

DENVER A cholesterol-lowering drug made by Merck appears to reduce the risk of heart attacks, strokes and cardiac death in patients with chronic kidney disease, according to results of a new study.

 

Merck said results of a 9,000-patient clinical study showed that Vytorin (ezetimibe and simvastatin) reduced the risks by 16.1% compared with placebo. Results of the study were presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nephrology.

NEW YORK — Pfizer got promising results from a late-stage clinical trial of a cancer treatment, the drug maker said Friday.

 

Pfizer announced results of the phase-3 “AXIS 1032” trial of the kidney cancer drug axitinib, saying that it “significantly” extended the lives of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma compared with Nexavar (sorafenib), made by Bayer HealthCare and Onyx Pharmaceuticals.
