FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Drug maker Shionogi has launched a new medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, the company said Monday.

Shionogi announced the launch of Kapvay (clonidine hydrochloride), an extended-release drug for treating ADHD in children and adolescents. The company said the drug was the only ADHD treatment approved as an add-on to stimulant medications, though it can be used alone as well.

MORRISTOWN, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic drug made by Watson Pharmaceuticals for cancer-related pain, Watson said Monday.

Watson announced the approval of fentanyl buccal tablets in the 0.1-mg, 0.2-mg, 0.6-mg and 0.8-mg strengths.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Nearly 500 retailers in Mississippi had to submit to Food and Drug Administration inspections concerning alleged tobacco sales to minors, the FDA said Friday.

The FDA said it visited 493 retailers and issued 25 warning letters over the last three months using state inspectors the agency had commissioned. Mississippi was the first state to participate in the FDA’s State Enforcement Program, which started in the summer and is designed to enforce provisions of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 and implement regulations.

PRINCETON, N.J. — A new oral treatment for Type 2 diabetes hit the shelves Friday.

Bristol-Myers Squibb and AstraZeneca announced the availability of Kombiglyze XR (saxagliptin and metformin hydrochloride), which the companies called the only once-daily treatment for diabetes that combined metformin with a DPP-4 inhibitor, the drug class to which saxagliptin belongs.

The drug is designed for use alongside diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with Type 2 diabetes.

Pfizer has paid Seattle Genetics $8 million to license its antibody technology, Seattle Genetics said Thursday.

BOTHELL, Wash. — Pfizer has paid Seattle Genetics $8 million to license its antibody technology, Seattle Genetics said Thursday.

Seattle Genetics, based in Bothell, Wash., said Pfizer would pursue antibodies for treating an unspecified form of cancer using its antibody-drug conjugate technology. ADCs are monoclonal antibodies that selectively deliver anti-cancer agents to tumor cells. Seattle Genetics has developed anti-tumor drugs called auristatins, which are attached to antibodies and then used to kill the cancer cells while sparing noncancer cells.

PRINCETON, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic contraceptive made by Sandoz, the company said.

Sandoz, the generics arm of Swiss drug maker Novartis, announced the FDA approval of Introvale (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol), a generic version of Duramed’s Seasonale.

Branded and generic versions of Seasonale had sales of around $91 million during the 12-month period ended in November, according to IMS Health.

SAN DIEGO — The Food and Drug Administration has accepted the approval application for a chemotherapy drug to treat lung cancer from AdventRx Pharmaceuticals, the drug maker said Thursday.

The FDA accepted AdventRx’s application for Exelbine (vinorelbine). The drug is a branded generic, being formulated with the same active ingredient as Navelbine, originally marketed by French drug maker Pierre Fabre and now available as a generic from seven companies.

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — The Food and Drug Administration has expanded the approved usage of a drug made by Genentech, part of Swiss drug maker Roche.

The FDA approved Actemra (tocilizumab) for the inhibition and slowing of structural joint damage, improvement of physical function and achievement of clinical response in patients with moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis. The drug originally was approved as a treatment for RA last year.

Merck said the FDA would seek to complete its review of the application for the drug boceprevir within six months. Authorities in the European Union have granted expedited review as well.

IRVINE, Calif. — A U.S. biotech company plans to develop a biosimilar of a monoclonal antibody used to treat cancers and autoimmune disorders.

Spectrum Pharmaceuticals announced Wednesday a deal with Viropro to develop a biosimilar rituximab, marketed under the brand name Rituxan by Roche’s Genentech division. Global sales of rituximab in 2009 were $5.6 billion, according to Spectrum.

The Food and Drug Administration has extended by six months the market exclusivity of a lung disease drug for use in children.

CLINTON, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has extended by six months the market exclusivity of a lung disease drug for use in children.

Drug maker Ikaria said Wednesday that the FDA had extended pediatric exclusivity period for the drug Inomax (nitric oxide) from January 2013 to July 2013.

Ikaria said the extension was based on results of a clinical study of the drug in preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a serious condition that results from lung injury.
