Ahold USA has launched ACT! in an effort to get its pharmacists to build closer relationships with their patients. ACT! stands for "Acknowledge," "Coach" and "Thank." Ahold USA owns the Stop & Shop, Giant Food of Landover, Md., and Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Pa., chains in the Northeast.

The Community Pharmacy Foundation and the National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation announced on Monday that they will work together to evaluate the impact on patient outcomes of the integration of community pharmacy-provided medication management strategies into a statewide, patient-centered medical home network in North Dakota. More than 70% of physicians participate in the state’s medical home program.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday took action to remove from the market illegal products, including some labeled as dietary supplements, that claim to mitigate, treat, cure or prevent diabetes and related complications. The agency recently issued letters warning 15 companies that the sale of their illegally marketed diabetes products violates federal law. The letters were sent to foreign and domestic companies whose products were sold online and in retail stores.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic diabetes drug made by Lupin, the company said.

MUMBAI, India — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a generic diabetes drug made by Lupin, the company said.

Lupin, based in India, received approval for metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets in the 500-mg and 1,000-mg strengths. The drug is a generic version of Santarus' Glumetza.

Glumetza had sales of about $144 million during the 12-month period that ended in March, according to IMS Health. The drug is an extended-release formulation of metformin hydrochloride, a widely prescribed drug used for treating Type 2 diabetes.

The Phoenix-based specialty pharmacy company announced Wednesday the release of "Guide to Selecting the Appropriate Specialty Pharmacy: Important Considerations for Your Oncology Practice." The white paper highlights such factors as the ability to provide comprehensive, quality clinical services and support the practice's needs.

The Ownership Workshop, sponsored by McKesson and in part by Pharmacists Mutual and Live Oak Bank, gives prospective and current pharmacy owners an in-depth look at the industry and the financial, management and marketing skills needed to operate a successful pharmacy business. HAYWARD, Calif. — Impax Labs has appointed Mary Pendergast to its board of directors, the generic drug maker said.

Impax said Pendergast's appointment became effective last Wednesday. Pendergast is president of legal and regulatory consulting firm Pendergast Consulting. She previously served as deputy commissioner and senior adviser to the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration for 18 years.

The Food and Drug Administration has approved a gel formulation of a foot fungus drug made by Merz Pharmaceuticals, according to published reports.

NEW YORK — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a gel formulation of a foot fungus drug made by Merz Pharmaceuticals, according to published reports.

According to reports, the FDA approved a gel formulation of Merz's Naftin (naftifine), used to treat athlete's foot, known medically as tinea pedis.

A cream version of the drug is already approved, and the latest approval was based on two clinical trials of more than 1,700 patients, according to reports.
