WASHINGTON Enactment by the White House of a landmark, pharmacy-friendly drug-disposal bill won quick praise from chain pharmacy leaders Thursday.

President Obama signed the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act into law Wednesday, changing the way the Drug Enforcement Administration regulates the return and destruction of unused and unwanted higher-risk medications. The new law establishes a legal process by which consumers can return their lawfully obtained controlled substance medications to DEA-authorized entities for disposal.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. A group representing the nation's independent pharmacies heralded two pieces of legislation that pertain to the safe disposal of prescription drugs.

The National Community Pharmacists Association announced its support of legislative efforts made by the House of Representatives and the Senate, which passed their respective drug disposal bills Wednesday and last month. NCPA also added that it was “a giant step forward to allow for controlled substances, which had previously been precluded from any disposal programs, to be included.”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. Independent pharmacies have garnered the highest customer satisfaction scores among its competitors, according to results of a J.D. Power and Associates study.

Over-the-counter and health-and-beauty care marketers have been struggling to find ways to harness the communication power of pharmacy to help them build their brand equity. The path to achieve this goal has been for consumer packaged goods companies to develop pharmacy programs designed to educate and capture the attention of pharmacists so that pharmacists may communicate and educate their patients about their products at the point of decision-making.

WHAT IT MEANS AND WHY IT’S IMPORTANT There are two key takeaways within the SMARTcare offering, and they both spell opportunity. First, there is the obvious tie-in with over-the-counter recommendations. Second is the scalability of this online counseling tool, because as the number of offerings provided at retail clinics continues to expand, this tool will be able to expand right along with it.
