Timed with the recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day, the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy announced the release of an Opioid Overdose Toolkit. This resource is designed to help raise awareness of overdose prevention, treatment and recovery for first responders, prescribers and patients.

Rite Aid's same-store sales got another boost in August, the retail pharmacy chain said.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid's same-store sales got another boost in August, the retail pharmacy chain said Thursday.

The 4,604-store chain reported a 1.1% increase in same-store sales for the five-week period that ended Aug. 31, including a 1.7% decrease in front-end comps and a 2.5% increase in pharmacy comps, which included a 1.6% negative effect from the introduction of new generic drugs. Same-store prescription count decreased by 0.2%.

Total sales for the month were $2.425 billion, a 1.1% increase over $2.399 billion last year.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Thursday posted August sales of $6.2 billion, an increase of 5.6%. Sales in comparable stores increased by 4.8% in August. 

Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased by 5.6% in August and increased 7.4% on a calendar day-shift adjusted basis. This year’s August had one additional Saturday and one fewer Wednesday compared with August 2012. These calendar shifts negatively impacted prescriptions filled at comparable stores by 180 basis points.

iMedicare said the growth of the platform would help thousands of seniors enroll in affordable health insurance and prescription drug coverage by enabling pharmacists to help them shop for Medicare insurance plans, automatically integrating their prescription medications in one mobile system.

To help battle the national prescription drug abuse epidemic in the country, CVS Caremark embarked on a program whereby it tapped its extensive database to identify and halt inappropriate prescribing of high-risk drugs.

The reality is that drug stores have been caught in the middle of the nation's prescription drug abuse epidemic, and CVS Caremark’s efforts are an example of the larger role that retail pharmacy can play.

The drug maker announced the availability of EnteraGam (serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin protein isolate, SBI) for patients with chronic loose or frequent stools due to irritable bowel syndrome or HIV. The drug is meant to treat patients who have limited or impaired ability to ingest, digest, absorb or metabolize ordinary foodstuffs or certain nutrients.

July sales totaled $6.03 billion, an increase of 8% from $5.59 billion for the same month in fiscal 2012. Sales in comparable stores increased by 6.3% in July. Calendar day shifts positively impacted total comparable sales by 1.4 percentage points, while generic drug introductions in the last 12 months negatively impacted total comparable sales by 1.8 percentage points.

CHICAGO — Nearly a quarter of Americans are using electronic medical records for checking test results, refilling prescriptions and making appointments, while more than half say they would like to use them, but don't have access, according to a new study.

The study, by Aeffect and 88 Brand Partners, included 1,000 respondents ages 25 years to 55 years, finding that 24% of them used EMRs, while 52% would like to. At the same time, nearly half of patients take EMR access into consideration when choosing a healthcare provider.
