The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation is inviting health and pharmacy experts and other researchers to join the Herculean effort to improve patient adherence rates.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The National Association of Chain Drug Stores Foundation is inviting health and pharmacy experts and other researchers to join the Herculean effort to improve patient adherence rates.

The invitation comes in the form of a new Request for Proposal, issued Tuesday by the NACDS Foundation. The foundation is seeking bids from research organizations to study primary medication nonadherence, which occurs when a patient fails to fill or pick up his or her newly prescribed medication.

A healthcare accrediting organization is revising three products in its Pharmacy Quality Management suite of programs.

WASHINGTON — A healthcare accrediting organization is revising three products in its Pharmacy Quality Management suite of programs.

URAC said its pharmacy committee approved revisions to its mail service, specialty pharmacy, and workers' compensation and property and casualty for pharmacy benefit management accreditation programs. The products revised include:

  • Mail-service pharmacy, version 2.0;

  • Specialty pharmacy, version 2.0; and

According to research funded by the Alliance for Save Online Pharmacies and released by The Partnership at DrugFree.org, illegal online pharmacies have sold drugs to 36 million Americans.

DUBLIN, Ohio — The Cardinal Health Foundation has strengthened its alliance with the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy to address prescription drug abuse among teens.

The Cardinal Health Foundation and the college's GenerationRx youth toolkit provides healthcare providers, pharmacists, parents, teachers, youth group leaders and other concerned citizens with unique, interactive resources to educate teens about the realities and dangers of prescription drug abuse, the Cardinal Health Foundation said.

MINNETONKA, Minn. — More retailers have signed on for UnitedHealthcare's prescription savings program that caters to Medicare Part D members.

Target, H-E-B, Hy-Vee, Publix Super Markets, Food Lion, Bloom, Harveys and Sweetbay Supermarket have joined the insurance company's Pharmacy Saver program, which allows members to purchase some scripts for $2 for 30-day and some 90-day supplies, and applies to hundreds of prescription drugs, including 8-of-the-10 most commonly used by UnitedHealthcare Medicare plan members.

RYE BROOK, N.Y. — The second-largest Medicare Part D plan sponsor in the country has named an independent pharmacy as its pharmacy of the year.

Universal American announced Thursday that it gave the 2010 Community CCRx Pharmacy of the Year recognition to Peterson Drug and Gifts in Mountain Lake, Minn. The award takes its name from Universal American’s Community CCRx Prescription Drug plans, in which Peterson Drug and Gifts participates.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Blending the power of one of the most widely used pharmacy automation systems with a massive database of prescribing physicians, two major pharmacy technology providers have unveiled a new partnership designed to give dispensing pharmacists immediate access to real-time prescriber data.


Retail pharmacy technology provider PDX and Healthcare Data Solutions announced the alliance in November. The goal, according to both companies, is to link users of the PDX Pharmacy System with a real-time prescriber verification process.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid on Thursday posted sales of $6.2 billion, down 2.3%, for its third quarter ended Nov. 27. Same-store sales for the period declined 1.3%, representing flat front-end sales and a pharmacy comparable sales decline of 1.9%.

For the five-week period ended Nov. 27, which includes Black Friday sales, front-end sales were up 1.3% while pharmacy same-store sales, which included an approximate 248 basis points negative impact from new generic introductions, declined 2.5%. Overall monthly comps fell 1.3%.
