Nearly a quarter of Americans are using electronic medical records for checking test results, refilling prescriptions and making appointments, while more than half say they would like to use them, but don't have access, according to a new study.

CHICAGO — Nearly a quarter of Americans are using electronic medical records for checking test results, refilling prescriptions and making appointments, while more than half say they would like to use them, but don't have access, according to a new study.

The study, by Aeffect and 88 Brand Partners, included 1,000 respondents ages 25 years to 55 years, finding that 24% of them used EMRs, while 52% would like to. At the same time, nearly half of patients take EMR access into consideration when choosing a healthcare provider.

Express Scripts and Walgreens last week announced the launch of Smart90 Walgreens, a new option for Express Scripts clients interested in 90-day prescription drug programs and to help drive lower costs. The program is expected to improve medication adherence by both providing a cost value to the patient while maintaining what has more and more become a crucial patient-pharmacist face-to-face encounter.

What a difference a year makes. MONTEREY, Calif. — A new website for young people with acne allows them to receive online dermatology consultations and receive prescriptions.

YoDerm charges $59 for a three-step plan. Users upload photos of their affected areas and answer several medical questions, a process that typically takes less than 10 minutes. Within 48 hours, a dermatologist examines the photos and information and creates a personalized treatment plan. After that, a treatment plan is delivered and, if included, a prescription is sent electronically to the user's preferred local pharmacy.

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association endorsed the Restoring Access to Medication Act (H.R. 2835), which would repeal a requirement enacted into law as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 that requires consumers to obtain a prescription in order to utilize their flexible spending arrangements and health savings accounts to purchase over-the-counter medicines.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Prior-authorization software company CoverMyMeds reached a milestone Tuesday as the 5 millionth PA request was sent through its system.

CoverMyMeds said the announcement came a day after the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs published the first e-prescribing standard to include the electronic PA implementation guide. CoverMyMeds has worked with the industry to develop the standard and said it was the first provider software vendor to use the standard at scale.

His remarks focused on discussion draft legislation offered by U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., that seeks to address the concerns raised by the New England Compounding Center’s fungal meningitis tragedy late last year.

NEW YORK — Legislation introduced in the Senate would coordinate efforts at various levels of government and industry to reduce the growing problem of prescription drug abuse.

The bill, the Combatting Prescription Drug Abuse Act, was introduced by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., drawing praise from pharmacy groups. Among other things, the bill could create a 30-member Combatting Prescription Drug Abuse Commission that would include people from health care and law enforcement, including people from the pharmacy industry.
