Many pharmacies are changing their staffing models in preparation for customers with expanded Medicaid benefits — especially as we approach the New Year. This is a good time for me to remind you to be thinking about your eligibility program.

In January, I offered Drug Store News readers a look at the pharmacy and technology trends facing our industry for the year. Here we are in June (can you believe it?), so I thought we should have a progress check and update for the back half of 2013.

Earlier this month, Walgreens announced that immunization records would be sent directly from its more than 7,800 Walgreens and Duane Reade stores and 350 Take Care Clinics to primary care providers over Surescripts’ electronic prescribing network using Surescripts’ Clinical Interoperability services. And later this year, the company plans to share immunization data with local and state public health agencies, and share Take Care Clinic patient summaries with primary care providers. Drug Store News recently had the opportunity to speak with Surescripts president and CEO Harry Totonis about the new service.

The Federal Trade Commission is holding a public workshop in March to examine U.S. healthcare competition issues as healthcare spending swallows up a significant part of federal and state budgets. Among the topics up for discussion, according to reports, are retail clinics and telemedicine.

According to reports, the two-day workshop will be held March 20 and 21 in Washington, D.C. and will be webcast on the FTC’s site.

New investments in a range of commercial operations applications — such as customer relationship management, social media or integrated multi-channel marketing solutions — were cited by more than 70% of respondents as a priority.

SAN FRANCISCO — Grand View Research projects that the global mHealth market will reach well in excess of $20 billion from a base of $2 billion in 2012, as part of a recent market research study. Between 2014 and 2020, the firm estimates a CAGR of 47.6%. 

In 2012, monitoring services represented the largest segment, accounting for about 63% of the overall market share. Monitoring services include independent aging solutions, chronic disease management and post acute care services, as well as devices such as body trackers that are employed to monitor vital signs.

The Little Clinic, which is a subsidiary of Kroger, has clinics inside Kroger stores in Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio; King Soopers in Colorado, Fry’s Food Stores in Arizona and JayC in Indiana.

Verizon’s Converged Health Management, a remote patient-monitoring medical platform designed to help clinicians and patients manage patients’ health in between doctor visits, recently received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance to run on the iOS mobile operating system, Verizon announced Tuesday.

NEW YORK — Verizon’s Converged Health Management, a remote patient-monitoring medical platform designed to help clinicians and patients manage patients’ health in between doctor visits, recently received Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance to run on the iOS mobile operating system, Verizon announced Tuesday. 

Patients and clinicians now will be able to access Verizon’s solution on their iPhones and can use their iPads to access the Converged Health Management portal.
