FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a second product in BD's new line of injectable drugs, the company said Tuesday.

BD Rx, the pharmaceutical arm of the medical technology manufacturer, whose name stands for Becton, Dickinson and Co., received FDA approval for metoclopramide, part of its BD Simplist line of ready-to-administer pre-filled generic injectables. The product is an antiemetic, a drug used to stop vomiting.

BD announced the approval of diphenhydramine hydrochloride injection, an antihistamine, packaged in its recently launched Simplist pre-filled injectables, which are made by subsidiary BD Rx and designed to improve patient care and safety by decreasing the number of steps in the traditional vial and syringe injection sequence and thus reduce the potential risk of medication errors.

LONGUEUIL, Quebec — The Jean Coutu Group recently announced that it is acquiring a 50% stake in Le Groupe Médicus, which specializes in orthotic and prosthetic devices.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in 1957 by Jean-Claude Bleau, Médicus is a private-sector employer of orthotist and prosthetist graduates in Quebec and specializes in orthotic and prosthetic devices and rehabilitation products by completing the multidisciplinary treatment plan.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Medical supply company BD has introduced a disposable injection pen that it said was designed for drugs requiring frequent, low-volume injections or variable dosing.

The company's BD Medical division announced the introduction of the Vystra, which it will showcase at the 2012 Parenteral Drug Association meeting in Las Vegas.

The company said the pen is designed for ease of use, comfort and reliability, including design features like multi-dosing, simple dose dialing and correction with audible clicks and large and clear dose markings.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Generic drug maker Hospira has acquired a manufacturing and research and development center from an Indian drug maker for $200 million, Hospira said Wednesday.

Hospira said it bought the Food and Drug Administration-approved active pharmaceutical ingredient factory and R&D facility in Aurangabad, India, from Orchid Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals, saying it would reduce Hospira's costs, support its supplying of antibiotics and pave the way for future API development.

PARIS — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a voice-guided injection device made by Sanofi for severe allergic reactions, the drug maker said Monday.

The French drug maker announced the approval of Auvi-Q (epinephrine), calling it the first epinephrine auto-injector with audio and visual cues that guides users through the injection process. Sanofi US licensed the North American commercialization rights to Auvi-Q from Intelliject, which has retained commercialization rights for the rest of the world.

BD Medical announced Wednesday the introduction of the BD Hyflow needle, calling it an alternative to larger needles that could be more painful for patients receiving the highly viscous drugs that are becoming more common in drug pipelines. The Hyflow is a 27-gauge needle designed for use with BD's prefillable syringe systems that increases flow to facilitate use with auto injectors and infusers.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Medical supply manufacturer BD has released a syringe with a shorter needle designed to reduce discomfort in patients with diabetes who must inject insulin, the company said Tuesday.

BD announced the introduction of the ultra-fine 6mm needle, saying more than 80% of patients expressed a preference for it in trials, and a recent article published by the American Association of Diabetes Educators recognized the safety and efficacy of shorter needles.

The needle is designed to deliver insulin subcutaneously in adults and children.

McNeil's Infants' Tylenol SimpleMeasure includes a dosing syringe, which a parent or caregiver inserts into a protective cover, or “flow restrictor,” at the top of the bottle to measure the proper dose. In some cases, the flow restrictor was pushed into the bottle when inserting the syringe.
