Meda has signed an agreement to acquire ZpearPoint AS, including global rights to its main product, EB24, an OTC line for treating dental erosion.

GÖTEBORG, Sweden — Meda has signed an agreement to acquire ZpearPoint AS, including global rights to its main product, EB24, an OTC line for  treating dental erosion.  

The EB24 product is based on hydrogen fluoride highly diluted in water. In studies, the product has shown that it is able to penetrate enamel surfaces and form calcium fluoride resulting in an anti-erosive effect. As such, EB24 works as a protective agent against dental erosion.

NEW YORK — India-based Sun Pharmaceutical Industries may buy Sweden-based Meda for $5 billion to $6 billion, according to published reports.

Reuters reported that the two companies were in talks for Sun to buy Meda in order to boost its generics business in developed markets.

Meda announced Friday that it has signed an agreement to acquire MidNite, an OTC sleep-aid product.

SOLNA, Sweden — Meda announced Friday that it has signed an agreement to acquire MidNite, an OTC sleep-aid product. MidNite is well established in the U.S. and holds a market leading position within a growing category. Transaction terms were not disclosed.

“This acquisition enhances our presence in the U.S. ahead of other future OTC launches," stated Anders Lönner, CEO of Meda. 

Annualized revenues for MidNite are approximately $15 million, the company reported.

Among the changes, each SKU has the pill form embossed and anchors the design at the bottom of the pack. A mix of spot and matte varnish provides depth, dimension and interest on shelf.

Canadian drug maker Valeant Pharmaceuticals International will acquire rights to topical drugs for eczema and cold sores from Swedish drug maker Meda.

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario — Canadian drug maker Valeant Pharmaceuticals International will acquire rights to topical drugs for eczema and cold sores from Swedish drug maker Meda.

Valeant said it would buy rights for the eczema drug Elidel (pimecrolimus) and the cold sore drug Xerese (acyclovir and hydrocortisone) for the United States, Canada and Mexico. Valeant said, however, that Xerese has not yet received regulatory approval in Canada.

HUDDINGE, Sweden — Meda has launched a new cold sore treatment made by commercialization partner Medivir, Medivir said Tuesday.

The Swedish drug maker launched Xerese (acyclovir and hydrocortisone), a topical combination product designed to treat recurrent herpes simplex labialis.

Medivir said the U.S. market for cold sore products is $230 million, and it expected the drug to be successful, given Meda’s presence in the U.S. market.

STOCKHOLM Meda on Monday announced an agreement to acquire the specialty pharmaceutical company Alaven in a move that will “significantly enhance Meda’s marketing capabilities in the United States and expand the therapeutic focus to include both gastroenterology and women’s health — areas that Meda already operates in outside of the United States,” the company stated.

 

Meda also identified Alaven’s over-the-counter platform, which accounts for approximately 25% of Alaven’s sales, as an attractive element to the deal.

A lot of generic drug companies have conducted business in the branded drug market on the side for a long time, with Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Watson Pharmaceuticals standing out as good examples. But lately, some branded drug companies have sought to get into generics as well.

 

Meda Pharmaceuticals, the U.S. subsidiary of Swedish drug maker Meda A.B., recently decided to create its own generics subsidiary, calling it Wallace Pharmaceuticals, senior marketing director John White told Drug Store News.
