MedImmune said Wednesday a partnership with Pantley, author of the No-Cry Solution parenting book series, to publish "A Parent's Guide to Flu Season." The guide is designed to educate parents on the importance of flu prevention and help them navigate through flu myths and misconceptions.

LONDON — AstraZeneca has acquired a British developer of biotech drugs for treating cancer, AstraZeneca said Tuesday.

The company said its MedImmune subsidiary had acquired privately held Spirogen and also entered into a collaboration with ADC Therapeutics to develop two of ADC's antibody-drug conjugate programs, currently in pre-clinical development. MedImmune will make an equity investment in ADC, which has an existing licensing agreement with Spirogen.

LONDON — AstraZeneca has bought Maryland-based biotech company Amplimmune, the drug maker said.

AstraZeneca announced the acquisition of privately owned Amplimmune through its MedImmune biologics research and development subsidiary, saying it would boost its cancer drug pipeline. Amplimmune's pipeline includes several experimental treatments, such as AMP-514, a monoclonal antibody currently in preclinical development for which the company hopes to apply to start clinical trials before the end of the year.

Genentech, a subsidiary of Swiss drug maker Roche, announced the approval of Actemra (tocilizumab) for polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children ages 2 years and older, either alone or combined with the generic drug methotrexate.

WILMINGTON, Del. — Anglo-Swedish drug maker AstraZeneca has made the drug vandetanib available to certain thyroid cancer patients.

The drug maker announced Monday that the drug would be available to patients with medullary thyroid cancer that could not be removed surgically or that had spread to other parts of the body. The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug on April 6, and it is available exclusively through the pharmacy business unit of Biologics Inc., an integrated cancer management company.

WASHINGTON Emergent BioSolutions has landed a $51 million contract from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority to develop a new anthrax vaccine.

In the first two years of the contract, Emergent will develop the final vaccine formulation and test its stability. HHS said it can extend the contract annually for up to three years to support scale-up and optimization for large-scale manufacturing, as well as additional animal studies needed to apply for Food and Drug Administration approval of the vaccine.
