Cough-cold suppliers are presently operating in a challenging environment, noted Matthew Mannelly, Prestige Brands CEO, president and director, during a conference call Thursday.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — Cough-cold suppliers are presently operating in a challenging environment, noted Matthew Mannelly, Prestige Brands CEO, president and director, during a conference call Thursday. The return of Tylenol to the cough-cold aisle and the accompanying media splash from McNeil Consumer isn't the only competitive factor impacting the cough-cold category, Mannelly said. The season is down more than 15% versus last year. And that lack of consumption, coupled with an overall soft retail environment, is forcing retailers to significantly cut back on inventories.

The coming cough-cold season is difficult to project. On one hand, this year's cough-cold incidence will be going against very strong illness rate numbers from last year. In addition, with both McNeil Consumer and Novartis Consumer supporting the relaunch of a number of cough-cold products, the category is expected to be very promotional this season, a factor that could squeeze margins.

DSN estimates that annualized sales of cold and allergy products through mid-June were up 7.9%, representing almost $570 million in incremental dollars.

What are the chances of that happening again?

The booming 2012-2013 cough-cold season may not have come with a fresh set of challenges for the 2013-2014 season.

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. — The booming 2012-2013 cough-cold season may not have come with a fresh set of challenges for the 2013-2014 season. Retailers who had to beef up their cold and flu remedy supplies in the latter half of the season may not need to order as heavily over the summer as they may have in the past. A late start to the allergy season also is reducing the need for cough-cold stock.
