CVS Caremark announced on Friday that it has agreed to pay $17.5 million, to be allocated among the federal government and 10 participating states, to resolve a civil complaint concerning how its CVS/pharmacy retail pharmacies submitted reimbursement claims in certain states for prescriptions filled for "dual eligible" patients who have coverage under both Medicaid and a third-party insurance plan.

Pharmacy benefit manager SXC Health Solutions will acquire “substantially all” assets of Worcester, Mass.-based PBM MedMetrics Health Partners, SXC said Tuesday.

LISLE, Ill. — Pharmacy benefit manager SXC Health Solutions will acquire “substantially all” assets of Worcester, Mass.-based PBM MedMetrics Health Partners, SXC said Tuesday.

The companies expect the acquisition to be completed in second quarter 2011. Financial terms were not disclosed. MedMetrics manages about $200 million in annual drug spend.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Generex Biotechnology has revamped its corporate website to underscore the company's focus on the development and approval of its diabetes and immunotherapeutic vaccine products pipeline.

The company said that the site will provide improved descriptions of products, technologies, scientific research in progress, trial results and new corporate relationships as they unfold. Generex also will boost its social media presence through Twitter and Facebook.

Ken's Foods has increased the size of its salad dressing bottles.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. — Ken's Foods has increased the size of its salad dressing bottles.

The company said its new 9-oz. salad dressing bottle replaces its existing 8-oz. bottle, giving the consumer 12.5% more dressing for their money, Ken's Foods said. What's more, 26 varieties of Ken's salad dressings will be "dressed up" in the updated bottles.

"We held focus groups with our end users," said Bob Merchant, Ken's Foods COO. "They made it clear that they prefer plastic bottles over glass, and Ken's listens to consumers."

EatSmart, currently a free download available for the iPhone, Android, smartphones, tablets and the Web, is an app that provides those affected by or at risk for Type 2 diabetes with simple meal planning tips and tricks.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop has gone mobile.

The retailer on Monday announced that it has developed a mobile application, designed for iPhone and Android devices, which syncs with customer loyalty cards, providing access to online accounts. Customers can access store circulars to check out everyday savings on the go and also get directions to the nearest Stop & Shop.

Stop & Shop customers are invited to download the mobile app for free at the App Store or Android Market.

The company said that the 2011 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest - Category 23 Variety six-pack has hit store shelves. The variety pack includes two bottles each of Richard Roper's Friar Hop Ale, Rodney Kibzey's Blackened Hops and Caitlin DeClercq's Honey B's Lavender Wheat, which all were named winners in Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest in 2010.

Exergen said its portfolio of intellectual property rights has expanded with the new patent for its TemporalScanner brand of noninvasive thermometry products. Recently, Exergen said it filed a patent infringement suit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts against Kidz-Med, American Scientific Resources and Tecnimed SRL.

Genzyme recently accepted Sanofi’s $20.1 billion offer for the Cambridge, Mass.-based biotech company. Sanofi had sought to buy the company since last July, when it offered $18.5 billion, or $69 per share.

QUINCY, Mass. — Stop & Shop is taking supermarket energy efficiency to a new level at a store in New England.

The supermarket chain, owned by Netherlands-based Royal Ahold, announced the installation of a 400-kilowatt fuel cell at its store in East Torrington, Conn.

The fuel cell, a UTC Power PureCell System Model 400, is expected to generate more than 90% of the store’s electrical energy.

SILVER SPRING, Md. —The Food and Drug Administration announced Friday the approval of Waltham, Mass.-based Thermo Fisher’s QMS Everolimus Immunoassay, a test that monitors the blood for levels of Novartis’ drug Zortress (everolimus).

Zortress is a drug used to prevent rejection of transplanted kidneys.

“QMS Everolimus is the first FDA-cleared test physicians can use to maintain appropriate levels of the immunosuppressant everolimus,” FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health director Jeffrey Shuren said.

The FDA granted fast-track review status to the cell-based therapy Vascugel, made by Pervasis Therapeutics. The FDA grants the status to accelerate review of treatments for serious and life-threatening conditions, particularly those that address serious, unmet medical conditions.
