The Food and Drug Administration has exceeded its goals for hiring new staff as part of a user-fee law for generic drugs, according to an internal memo sent to staff members.

SILVER SPRINGS, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has exceeded its goals for hiring new staff as part of a user-fee law for generic drugs, according to an internal memo sent to staff members.

In a memo to staff of the agency's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, center director Janet Woodcock wrote that for fiscal year 2013, the FDA hired 234 people as part of the Generic Drug User Fee Amendments Human Capital Team. The goal was to hire 231 as part of a three-year push in which it hopes to hire 921, including 461 during fiscal year 2014.

LANDOVER, Md. – Giant Food has started offering flu vaccinations at all of its in-store pharmacies, the supermarket chain said Monday.

Giant, based in Landover, Md., and owned by Ahold USA, said customers with a Giant Pharmacy Prescription Savings Care would receive $10 off the regular price of a flu shot and that most major insurance plans and Medicare would be accepted. Also, customers will be eligible to receive a coupon book with more than $40 in savings from various vendors.

CARLISLE, Pa. — Giant Food of Landover, Md., division president Anthony Hucker is leaving his position, effective Friday, parent company Ahold USA said Monday.

Ahold USA said Hucker was leaving to pursue another opportunity. Ahold USA EVP operations Bhavdeep Singh will oversee the Giant-Landover division on an interim basis until a permanent replacement is named, the company said.

SALISBURY, N.C. — Food Lion has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2012 Superior Goal Achievement Award, one of the agency's honors for commercial refrigeration achievements by GreenChill Partners.

Food Lion officials received the award Monday at the FMI Energy & Store Development Conference in Baltimore, Md. The annual achievement award is in recognition of Food Lion meeting its GreenChill commitment for reducing refrigerant emissions.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug made by Celgene for treating patients with pancreatic cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, the agency said Friday.

The FDA announced the approval of Abraxane (paclitaxel protein-bound particles for injectable suspension, albumin-bound) for patients with late-stage forms of the disease. The drug is a chemotherapy treatment already approved for treating breast and lung cancers.

LONDON — AstraZeneca has bought Maryland-based biotech company Amplimmune, the drug maker said.

AstraZeneca announced the acquisition of privately owned Amplimmune through its MedImmune biologics research and development subsidiary, saying it would boost its cancer drug pipeline. Amplimmune's pipeline includes several experimental treatments, such as AMP-514, a monoclonal antibody currently in preclinical development for which the company hopes to apply to start clinical trials before the end of the year.

ROCKVILLE, Md. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a new epilepsy drug made by Supernus Pharmaceuticals, the company said Monday.

Supernus announced the approval of Trokendi XR, a once-daily, extended-release formulation of the drug topiramate. As part of the approval, the FDA granted Supernus a waiver for some of the requirements for studies of the drug in children and a deferral for submission of other post-marketing data due in 2019, followed by clinical assessments in 2025.

The FDA said it had issued an advance notice of proposed rule making, or ANPRM, to obtain information related to potential regulations it might consider. The agency said about 30% of adult smokers and more than 40% of youth smokers report smoking menthol cigarettes.
