PITTSBURGH — GNC Holdings on Tuesday concluded its Total Lean Challenge and Sweepstakes, rewarding 13 participants with a share of $25,000 in cash and prizes. 

The grand prize winner Karen Parra of Sacramento, Calif. received $10,000, and 12 other lucky sweepstakes participants each received $1,250 in prizes as part of a 12-week challenge designed to help consumers transform their eating and exercise habits for long-term weight management by giving them a practical way to take control of their health.

Kmart is offering savings on gas to members of its loyalty program who purchase Procter & Gamble products, the mass merchandise retailer said.

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. — Kmart is offering savings on gas to members of its loyalty program who purchase Procter & Gamble products, the mass merchandise retailer said.

Kmart said members of the Shop Your Way loyalty program could benefit from the offer at select stores and participating BP and Speedway gas stations through Saturday. Members who buy $50 in P&G products will receive a coupon allowing them to save $1 per gallon. Customers can save 30 cents per gallon at other times of the year.

Promotions were up across the front-end over the first half of 2013 as compared with the corresponding year-ago period, and digital coupons have continued to sustain double-digit growth as more marketers adopt a digital strategy and more retailers employ an omnichannel loyalty program to attract and retain customers.

LIVONIA, Mich. — Promotions were up across the front-end over the first half of 2013 as compared with the corresponding year-ago period. Couponing across non-food items were up 1.8%, according to the U.S. Mid-year 2013 CPG Coupon Industry Facts Report released Tuesday by NCH Marketing Services, a Valassis subsidiary.

Overall, consumers saved $1.8 billion in the first six months of 2013.

The 60-second spot features Alison Sweeney, host of NBC's "The Biggest Loser" and Walk with Walgreens spokeswoman, who explains how Balance Rewards members can use the program to log their fitness routines and weight loss.

CARLISLE, Pa. — A newly remodeled Giant Food Stores location includes an expanded selection of gluten-free items and digital kiosks for finding savings and placing orders.

Carlilsle, Pa.-based Giant, also known as Giant-Carlisle to distinguish it from Giant Food of Landover, Md., announced that it had finished remodeling its Bensalem, Pa., store. Both chains are owned by Ahold USA.

Walgreens and Duane Reade are testing a new mobile shopping system at stores in New York that help shoppers make choices by providing relevant product information from a network of friends and experts and then sending them "perks" they can redeem at checkout. The system combines the respective mobile platforms of Pretty in my Pocket and Sparkfly, and L'Oreal Paris has signed on as the first brand partner.

As retail industry futurist Doug Stephens recently told Drug Store News in an interview for an article in the Aug. 12 issue of the magazine about the future of retail pharmacy, younger consumers are "conditioned to understand that they can have whatever they want, whenever they want it, wherever they happen to be."

Results of the survey indicate that 68% of consumers plan to spend up to $500 this back-to-school shopping season compared with 63% in 2012 and 48% in 2011. Additionally, 17% of respondents plan to spend between $500 and $1,000, and 15% of shoppers said they have no back-to-school shopping budget this year.

LOS ANGELES — PriceGrabber released today the results of its first 2013 Back-to-School shopping survey. Results of the survey indicate that 68% of consumers plan to spend up to $500 this back-to-school shopping season compared with 3% in 2012 and 48% in 2011. Additionally, 17% of respondents plan to spend between $500 and $1,000, and 15% of shoppers said they have no back-to-school shopping budget this year. Conducted from June 17 to July 8, 2013, the survey includes responses from 2,191 U.S. online shopping consumers.

The retailer announced Monday that it was the first retailer to offer "eCoupons" that can be redeemed in the store, online and from a mobile device, personalized for members of the Shop Your Way loyalty program based on their interests, style preferences and shopping habits. Members can download the coupons at ShopYourWay.com or through the mobile app and receive rewards like 2% back in points when using their Sears MasterCard.

Walgreens on Tuesday named Mark Lelinski as its new corporate VP, market access. Lelinski will be responsible for contracting and pricing strategies; the integration efforts across Walgreens pharmacy, health and wellness division; overseeing sales and account management; and managing the continued evolution of the company’s managed market strategies.

DEERFIELD Ill. — Walgreens on Tuesday named Mark Lelinski as its new corporate VP, market access. Loblaw Cos. and Shoppers Drug Mart signed a definitive agreement under which Loblaw will acquire Shoppers Drug Mart. The move follows the acquisition of Safeway Canada by Sobey's last month and a growing incursion of U.S. retail north of the border, including both Target Canada and Walmart Canada.

When Loblaw announced last week it would debut a new health-focused format to take on Whole Foods, no one could have expected it would make a deal to become the No. 1 pharmacy retailer in Canada, leapfrogging from No. 8 to that top spot with the stroke of a pen. Together the companies will operate 1,797 pharmacies across a total of 2,348 locations, meaning 1-in-5 Canadian pharmacies now will be operated by the merged company. Shoppers Drug Mart represents $4.9 billion in annual pharmacy sales, representing 47.3% of sales and $3.9 million in pharmacy sales on a per store basis. And if Loblaw's pharmacy sales are brought up to that level, the merged companies will represent $6.8 billion in pharmacy revenue.

The company purported its "FDA-registered" ingredients undecylenic Acid and propolis "is the best antifungal nail polish for preventing toenail and finger nail fungus (onychomycosis)."
