New worries about the economy are affecting back-to-school shopping this fall. A recent National Retail Federation survey revealed that when shopping for back-to-school 2011, 44% of respondents said they were spending less overall, 37% were using coupons more often and half were shopping for sales more frequently.


Retailers promoted heavi­ly as consumers shopped late. Slightly more consumers said they would be shopping drug stores this year (21.1% versus 19.5% last year).

"The sluggish economy continues to strain household budgets while increasing consumer anxiety," Dillon said. "In fact, customers tell us their expectation for the economy are more pessimistic now than at any time this year."

recently rebranded as Walmart Mart. The 15,000-sq.-ft. stores are no-frills affairs with bare concrete floors and open-rafter ceilings. From a shoppers’ perspective, the store experience is consistent with the look and feel of a supercenter — only smaller.

Procter & Gamble's Charmin brand broke the Guinness World Record for the world's largest toilet roll.

CINCINNATI — Procter & Gamble's Charmin brand broke the Guinness World Record for the world's largest toilet roll.

Charmin said on Friday, which marks National Toilet Paper Day, that the roll measures more than 8 ft. high and a diameter for more than 9 ft. wide and is made entirely of Charmin toilet tissue. The roll was created at P&G's Paper Products company, located outside of Cape Girardeau, Mo., and transported to P&G's headquarters in Cincinnati for the unveiling.

Brynwood Partners VI L.P. has announced that High Ridge Brands, its portfolio company and owner of the North American Zest personal cleansing franchise, has signed a purchase agreement with Unilever to acquire the Alberto VO5 brand and marketing rights in the United States and Puerto Rico; as well as the rights to the Rave brand and marketing rights worldwide.

Walgreens recently launched a private-label line of food items to be called Nice!, according to published reports.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens recently launched a private-label line of food items to be called Nice!, according to published reports.

The initial products include dried fruit, white rice, baking soda, canned soup, tomato sauce, tea bags and a macaroni and cheese offering. The new store brand is being marketed by way of in-store point-of-purchase material, including ceiling banners, wing displays and play on the pharmacy's in-store radio.

TORONTO — Katz Group Canada, Canada’s largest integrated retail pharmacy network, has appointed Ken Keelor as chief merchandising officer, effective immediately. Keelor will oversee all merchandising and marketing functions for the Rexall family of pharmacies.

Keelor joins the organization from Sobey’s, a national multibanner grocery chain, where he held a number of executive positions during his 10 years with the company, most recently VP private-label procurement and global sourcing.
