Becton, Dickinson and Co. division BD Medical has launched a new prefillable glass syringe designed for biotech drugs.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — Becton, Dickinson and Co. division BD Medical has launched a new prefillable glass syringe designed for biotech drugs.

The medical supplies manufacturer announced Monday the launch of BD Neopak, which it said was designed to address industry challenges in developing, manufacturing and marketing biologics to patients, saying it would provide a higher level of quality and enhanced container and device integration. The company noted that seven of the top-10 drugs worldwide and more than half the drugs in development were biologics.

Dr. Reddy's Labs and Fujifilm have terminated a deal to market generic drugs in Japan, Dr. Reddy's said.

HYDERABAD, India — Dr. Reddy's Labs and Fujifilm have terminated a deal to market generic drugs in Japan, Dr. Reddy's said Monday.

The two had signed a memorandum of understanding in June 2011 to establish a joint venture for developing and manufacturing generics in Japan. The ending of the deal was the result of Fujifilm changing its long-term strategy for the drug business, but Dr. Reddy's said they would continue looking into opportunities for partnerships and alliances in other drug businesses.

Westport Pharmaceuticals announced findings from independent testing of their meth-resistant pseudoephedrine product, Zephrex-D.

ST. LOUIS — Westport Pharmaceuticals on Wednesday announced findings from independent testing of their meth-resistant pseudoephedrine product, Zephrex-D. The specially formulated pseudoephedrine product helps make it impractical and nearly impossible to illicitly manufacture methamphetamine.

According to the January 2013 "General Accounting Office Report," more than 87% of domestic meth labs utilize the One Pot meth-making method. Testing demonstrates that meth cannot be produced from Zephrex-D using this popular One Pot method.

The closing of the transaction is expected by the end of the second quarter of 2013, subject to customary closing conditions.

CHICAGO — Generic drug maker Hospira marked its fifth year marketing knock-off versions of biotech drugs in Europe Wednesday as it presented at the 2013 Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention this week.

The drug maker said it delivered more than 5 million doses of biosimilar medicines to patients in Europe and Australia. The convention includes multiple sessions devoted to such topics as biosimilar regulatory approval, manufacturing and market formation, the company said.

Generic drug maker Hospira has appointed Matt Stober as its SVP operations, the company said.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — Generic drug maker Hospira has appointed Matt Stober as its SVP operations, the company said.

Stober, who began working for Hospira in 2011 as corporate VP U.S. pharmacy operations, will have expanded leadership over all the company's drug manufacturing, as well as manufacturing science and technology, engineering, competitive strategy, health and safety, supply chain and procurement. Stober succeeds John Elliot, who has led operations since April 2012 and will provide continuity of support until he retires at the end of the year.

The company, a division of Japan-based Fujifilm, said it received the award in the photo-finishing category at Walmart's Supplier Summit in Orlando, Fla., last month. Fujifilm said the award recognized its manufacturing, quality and distribution capabilities.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — The Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug administered through a new line of injection devices made by BD, the company said Wednesday.

BD announced the approval of diphenhydramine hydrochloride injection, an antihistamine, packaged in its recently launched Simplist pre-filled injectables, which are made by subsidiary BD Rx and designed to improve patient care and safety by decreasing the number of steps in the traditional vial and syringe injection sequence and thus reduce the potential risk of medication errors.
