L'Oréal USA hosted 14 high school and 32 college students at its Fifth Avenue headquarters during spring break as part of its support for the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women's annual Role Model Program.

NEW YORK — L'Oréal USA hosted 14 high school and 32 college students at its Fifth Avenue headquarters during spring break as part of its support for the New York Coalition of One Hundred Black Women's annual Role Model Program. 

This initiative allows young women to learn practical workplace skills and to shadow professional women in their chosen careers for one week during spring semester break.

Under Walgreens’ organic growth model, it would have taken many years to achieve that type of footprint in New York City. But this was a new Walgreens. A transformative Walgreens.

Manhattan-based retailer Duane Reade is expanding its footprint with a second distinct location in the historic American Surety building in the city’s Financial District.

NEW YORK — Manhattan-based retailer Duane Reade is expanding its footprint with a second distinct location in the historic American Surety building in the city’s Financial District.

The new 22,000-sq.-ft. Duane Reade store (at the corner of Broadway and Pine) further develops the retailer's “Up market” store concept. The 24-hour store, with the grand opening on July 9, features such exclusive offerings and amenities as Up market: Chop and an in-store museum quality exhibit; a first for Duane Reade or any other U.S.-based drug store.

The first new pharmacy school in New York in almost 70 years, and the only one in Manhattan, graduated its first class in a commencement ceremony at the New York Academy of Medicine Friday.

NEW YORK — The first new pharmacy school in New York in almost 70 years, and the only one in Manhattan, graduated its first class in a commencement ceremony at the New York Academy of Medicine on Friday.

The Touro College of Pharmacy, located in Harlem, announced the graduation of 63 students of the class of 2012. The school, part of the larger Touro College and University system, opened in 2008.

NEW YORK — Manhattan-based pharmacy retailer Duane Reade has confirmed plans to relocate its corporate headquarters to 40 Wall St., which is already home to its mega flagship store.

The company’s current lease at its corporate headquarters at 440 Ninth Ave. was nearing its August expiration so the retailer, which is owned by Walgreens, began searching for a new space.

The "Rite Aid Shield Yourself, New York" event will take place at Grand Central's Vanderbilt Hall on Wednesday and Thursday, from the morning through the evening, with pharmacists on hand to administer shots.

New findings released Tuesday as part of the Trojan U.S. Sex Census revealed the average adult has sex 120 times a year (2.3 times per week), with more people in the Northeast reporting having sex more than any other U.S. region, averaging 130 times per year (2.5 times per week).

NEW YORK — Duane Reade is inviting comedic talents to supply humorous or witty captions for a Duane Reade cartoon as part of the retailer's Facebook "Caption Contest" that kicks off this week.

Each week for the next four weeks, the Manhattan-based retailer, which is owned by Walgreens, will run a caption-less cartoon in selected New York newspapers, where a uniquely New York scene or scenario is ripe for a clever caption. The subject matter in the various cartoons is designed to strike a chord with most city denizens.

In an interesting twist, and undoubtedly a clear reflection of the blurring lines within beauty, Macy’s has implemented an open-sell concept of niche beauty brands inside select store locations.


By October 2010, Impulse Beauty had made its way into more than 50 Macy’s stores across the country. An additional 50 Macy’s stores are expected to debut the concept in 2011. Impulse Beauty complements the department store’s traditional beauty counters, and enables customers to shop beauty brands on their own and seek help from beauty advisers if needed.

NEW YORK — LightWedge has created a series of e-reader covers for the New York Times Store.

The e-reader covers are adorned with photographs from NYT archives. Three of the new covers, which feature images of the New York City skyline, Statue of Liberty and Flatiron Building, made their debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The New York Times covers by LightWedge will be priced at $49.99 and will be available next month at the New York Times Store online and through several national retailers.

NEW YORK — Costco was scheduled to open another store in New York on Thursday at the Rego Park shopping center in Queens.

The store is the warehouse chain’s fifth location in the city and features such amenities as a pharmacy and a photo-processing department, according to published reports.

The chain operates another store in Queens, one in Brooklyn, one in Staten Island and one in Manhattan, which opened late last year in Spanish Harlem and showcases a scaled-down format.
