 NEW YORK — The impact of Hurricane Sandy has the potential of extending to holiday sales as a battered supply chain comes back online. The New York Times on Monday featured a story on those recovery efforts, noting that in addition to shutting down shipping terminals Hurricane Sandy impacted warehouses and distribution centers and slowed down delivers across the Northeast as delivery drivers contended with closed roads and gasoline shortages.

To help victims of Hurricane Sandy, customers shopping this week at any Walgreens or Duane Reade store in the United States will have the opportunity to make donations to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund in increments of $1, $2, $5 or $10, Walgreens announced Monday.

The fundraising initiative is in addition to Walgreens' announcement last week that it would make a $250,000 contribution to the same fund.

Walgreens on Wednesday pledged $250,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to supplement the organization's support of East Coast communities recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Walgreens on Wednesday pledged $250,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to supplement the organization's support of East Coast communities recovering from Hurricane Sandy.

The company also is donating three semitrailer truckloads of bottled water to a Red Cross facility in New Brunswick, N.J., to distribute throughout the disaster area. Walgreens stores in the region also are donating merchandise in response to community requests that have come in since the storm’s impact.

WOONSOCKET, R.I. — CVS Caremark announced on Wednesday a donation of more than $100,000 to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund to provide support to communities that have been affected by Hurricane Sandy.
 
A donation of $50,000 was made from the company's foundation, the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust. In addition, CVS/pharmacy is providing snacks and bottled water valued at more than $50,000 to distribute in communities in New Jersey that were impacted by the hurricane.

CINCINNATI — Kroger has become a member of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Million Dollar Club. The USHCC Million Dollar Club recognizes corporations that are leaders in supplier diversity and integrating Hispanic business enterprises into their strategic sourcing and procurement process. Corporations qualify by spending between $25 million to more than $500 million with Hispanic suppliers in the previous year.

This is Kroger's third consecutive year of qualifying for membership.

WASHINGTON — Jelly Belly president and COO Bob Simpson will take over the National Confectioners Association's executive board as chairman.

NCA's publication, Candy & Snack Today said Simpson replaces Mitchell Goetze as the chairman of the executive board. Blommer Chocolate Co. president Peter Blommer was appointed to serve as vice chairman, and Goetze, who is president and COO of Goetze's Candy Co., becomes ex-officio chairman.

MONTREAL — Valeant Pharmaceuticals CFO Howard Schiller has been appointed to the drug maker's board of directors.

Schiller joined Valeant as EVP and CFO in December 2011, following a 24-year career at Goldman Sachs. Schiller also serves on the New York board of Teach for America and on the board of the Cancer Research Institute. In addition, he also is on the business advisory council of the University of Chicago Law School.
