SAN DIEGO — Specialty drugs are expected to account for 50% of all drug costs by 2018, according to two new studies.

By contrast, specialty drugs accounted for 20% of all drug costs in 2009, but increased to 28.7% by 2012. Pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota conducted the studies, and Prime is presenting them Tuesday at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy's 25th annual meeting and expo in San Diego.

The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, a national professional association of pharmacists and healthcare practitioners, on Wednesday announced the appointment of Edith Rosato as CEO.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy, a national professional association of pharmacists and healthcare practitioners, on Wednesday announced the appointment of Edith Rosato as CEO.

Rosato will take over from long-time CEO Judith Cahill, who announced her plans to retire earlier this year.

In her new role as CEO, Rosato will be responsible for all program, financial and operational aspects of the academy, including a $10 million budget and staff of nearly 40. She will start her position in November.

Diabetes patients who adhere to their medication therapies have a significantly lower risk of hospitalization, according to a new study scheduled for presentation this week at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s 23rd annual meeting and showcase in Minneapolis.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Diabetes patients who adhere to their medication therapies have a significantly lower risk of hospitalization, according to a new study scheduled for presentation this week at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy’s 23rd annual meeting and showcase in Minneapolis.

The study, conducted by pharmacy benefit manager Prime Therapeutics using data from more than 15,000 patients, found that medication adherence among diabetes patients cut the risk of hospitalization by 31%, compared with patients who were not compliant.

It really didn’t matter how rock bands, movie stars or Russian cosmonauts washed up on shore, the passengers and crew of the S.S. Minnow were never getting off that island.

And that’s why eventually you just had to stop watching. You already knew the ending, and at some point the jokes just got stale.
