PITTSBURGH — Giant Eagle last month launched an app for users of Android devices that's tied to the grocer's loyalty program. So far, the app has been downloaded as many as 5,000 times.

The app enables shoppers to peruse the weekly ad circular on their mobile phones or computers. The grocer's eOffers (digital coupons) can be added to the customer's Giant Eagle Advantage Card.

WELD COUNTY, Colo. — The National Association of Counties is offering residents of Weld County, Colo., free prescription discount cards that provide patients an average of 24% savings off the retail price of prescription medications.

The NACo prescription discount card program, which was founded in 2004, has expanded across the United States to include more than 1,400 counties. The cards are available for Weld County residents at the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, as well as online.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid's customer loyalty card program has received recognition from a trade organization that focuses on marketing practices that use technology, Rite Aid said Friday.

The retail pharmacy chain announced that it received the 2011 LEADER Award in the loyalty category from the Shopper Technology Institute for its Wellness+ program. The institute presents the LEADER Awards for Excellence, sponsored by IBM, at its LEAD Marketing Conference. The award's name is an acronym for loyalty, engagement analytics and digital applications.

Winn-Dixie on Wednesday expanded its Fuelperks! rewards program throughout central Florida, incorporating 62 Winn-Dixie stores in Orlando and Daytona, Fla., areas into the program.

As part of the program, the Winn-Dixie customer reward card has been redesigned to include a magnetic stripe on the back, similar to a debit or credit card.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid increased sales and narrowed losses in second quarter 2012 as its Wellness+ loyalty card program continued to grow and its new Wellness store format saw continued expansion.

The company reported sales of $6.3 billion, a 1.8% increase over second quarter 2011's $6.2 billion. Losses were $92.3 million, compared with $197 million in the same period last year.

Empathica, a customer experience management solution-provider, polled more than 16,000 consumers, and found that operations and merchandise were the two most important elements in grocery shopping versus other elements, such as promotions, people and technology.

A recent consumer survey released by AlixPartners found that a little more than half of all consumers (51%) identify a traditional grocery retailer as their point of destination when making a grocery trip.

NEW YORK — A recent consumer survey released by AlixPartners found that a little more than half of all consumers (51%) identify a traditional grocery retailer as their point of destination when making a grocery trip. Such mass merchants as Walmart are capturing 30% of those trips, and the continued emphasis on fresh in the drug channel has drawn 5% of those trips into the mainstream pharmacy.

Dollar stores, another channel that has in the past few years made a significant push into food items, also draws 5% of all grocery trips.

WESTPORT, Conn. — TCC has been granted a global license for retail loyalty promotions to Rovio's Angry Birds franchise, TCC recently announced.

The multi-year agreement provides TCC with worldwide rights to the Angry Birds franchise in a wide range of distribution channels, including supermarkets and hypermarkets, drug stores, health and beauty chains, newspaper and newspaper kiosks, fuel chains and convenience stores.

The deal was brokered by TCC USA's VP marketing and licensing Nicole Piper.

TAMPA, Fla. — Winn-Dixie is putting the pedal to the metal for its Fuelperks! rewards program.

The retailer announced that beginning this week, shoppers that use the new Winn-Dixie customer reward card at any of the retailer's 95 stores in the Tampa/St. Petersburg, Tallahassee and Gainesville, Fla.; and Albany and Columbus, Ga., markets can earn significant fuel discounts at participating Shell stations.

Discount stores will continue to dominate as the destination for the majority of consumers’ back-to-school dollars this year, according to a survey by Accenture on parents’ back-to-school shopping plans.

NEW YORK — Discount stores will continue to dominate as the destination for the majority of consumers’ back-to-school dollars this year, according to a survey by Accenture on parents’ back-to-school shopping plans.

The majority of parents (59%) will spend between $100 and $500 on back-to-school shopping this year, with 21% of consumers saying they plan to spend more than $500 this year. That’s down from 28% in 2010, indicating a decline in spending on the big-ticket items for school.

British retailer Tesco will launch its loyalty card program in the United States, according to published reports.

LONDON — British retailer Tesco will launch its loyalty card program in the United States, according to published reports.

Tesco reportedly is launching the program in an effort to make a profit on its Fresh & Easy stores on the West Coast. The stores, which opened in 2007, have had difficulty turning a profit. The company now operates 175 stores, but has continued losing money.

The new card will allow customers to win points when they use it, much like loyalty cards it offers in the United Kingdom and other markets.
